The Honda ST1300 Pan European  is as accomplished a machine as you can buy. It does everything you ask of it and more. Smooth, comfortable, fast, powerful and well-built – the Honda ST1300 Pan European should be near the top of anyone’s list whether they’re in the market for a mile-munching tourer or a classy commuter. Superb.

Engine

MCN rating rating is 5
Owners' rating rating is 4

The Honda ST1300 Pan European’s DOHC V4 is the last of the great Honda V4s – and with its trademark smooth, turbine-like power, there’s no mistaking it for anything else. Any gear, any time the Honda ST1300 Pan European is ready for action with no fuss, just effortless delivery. It’s not exactly exciting, but, boy, is the Honda ST1300 Pan European competent.

Ride and Handling

MCN rating rating is 4
Owners' rating rating is 3

With its low seat and easy manners the Honda ST1300 Pan European is a pleasure to steer, in fact you’ll wonder where all that ground clearance went the first time your pegs grind out. The seat is initially too firm, but after 6-7000 miles it begins to yield. A bit. The brakes are excellent, the balance is near-perfect and even two-up on the Honda ST1300 Pan European you’ll barely notice the difference.

Equipment

MCN rating rating is 4
Owners' rating rating is 4

CBS (Combined Braking System) is standard fit on the Honda ST1300 Pan European, as are the panniers. You can add heated grips, a top box and soft luggage, too. ABS model Honda ST1300 Pan European available.

Quality and Reliability

MCN rating rating is 5
Owners' rating rating is 3.5

Some early Honda ST1300 Pan Europeans experienced some corrosion problems, but these seem to have been sorted on post-’04 machines. Honda ST1300 Pan European owners are usually experienced, responsible types which, combined with the ultra-reliable V4 motor and its low-maintenance shaft drive, means they’re a very safe bet for trouble-free miles new or used.

Value

MCN rating rating is 5
Owners' rating rating is 3.5

Honda ST1300 Pan Europeans depreciate very slowly, as there as so few secondhand examples on the market because owners hang onto their Pans. So although prices are high you will get more of your money back – and because of their reliability and desirability mileage is less of a factor on Honda ST1300 Pan Europeans, too. I'm on my second 1300 Pan. The first one, an '05 plate, had a very vague front end at high speed and a fair bit of movement as well from side to side and i'm guessing that this is what everyone calls the notorious 'weave'. I am meticulous about tyre pressures etc and tried different preload settings on the rear shock to solve it. I sold it because of the police version fatal crashes which got into my head and was affecting my riding. Recently though I have bought another one, a mint '02 model that belonged to a friend of mine which he said displayed no such behaviour and he's right. This '02 model is much better than my '05 one? Not only the handling, which is truly perfect but the motor feels smoother/stronger and the brakes are better too. So I can only guess that all of them are different in the handling department though I can't think why this would be? All I can say is that I am perfectly happy to give this particular Pan a 5 star rating in every category, it's utterly brilliant.

I was intending on buying a Pan European to replace my somewhat dodgy K1300 GT, but having done about 120 miles on a demo bike (admittedly an 05 with 24K on it) I have to say that the one I borrowed weaves quite a lot. Everything else is fine and dandy, goes like a train, stops really quite well, has a fantastic screen which does tend to keep most of the windblast off me,and by the way the screen being fully up is not the cause of the weave as it happens regardless of what position I leave the screen in!. I'm not going to give up on the idea, Just try and find a current 2009 model as opposed to a 2005 model, although was told today theres NO difference..... Any one care to comment on that????. A really rather nice bike spoilt by a weave that is unnerving to say the least and potentially bloody dangerous at worst. Ah well back to the drawing board. This style of bike is what im after so if anyone can think of a really smooth cruiser with large engine, non suspect handling(Oh and non shitty build quality AKA BMW!!) then I'd be interested to hear about it!!!

I have a 2005 ST1300 and it's great. Had it solo and two-up at 110mph on several occasions - no terrible weave, no massive tankslappers. In fact it feels more planted than my old CBR. Now YES there can be some buffeting at speed, usually when overtaking lorries on the motorway - especially with the screen up and a top-box on. What would you expect? - in these circumstances the pan has the aerodynamics of a fridge. If it bothers you, ride closer to the speed limit! My fave things about the pan: - Excellent low-speed balance and handling - Grunty motor with bags of power, even two-up - Electric screen allows you to ride with your visor open if you want - Loads of luggage space in the panniers - 200+ miles from a tank - I think the linked brakes work well Some criticism - A heavy bike to move around the garage at 300kg wet (but if I can do it at 5'7", it's not the end of the world) - The panniers get dirty because they act like a mudguard for the back wheel. - Not exactly pretty, especially from behind - The V4 engine sounds dull - Makes 90mph feel like 60!

I don’t understand the bad press from the Police and other contributors to this forum. My ST handles just fine for a sport tourer. I ride to the edge of the tyres, and it’s never done anything I wouldn’t expect from a 600+ lb bike. It’s not a Fireblade or 1098, but for what it is, I’d highly recommend it until Honda come out with a Blackbird replacement with another 200cc and ABS!

I bought this bike new in 04 and now the bike has over 43k miles on it. First of all i am a seasoned rider and have owned many bikes over the years so this is not the only bike i have had. I read some reviews on this bike and i can say i have never seen , felt or experienced this high speed problem. I have had the St many times to the red line and to me if feels as stable as any bike if not better. I have a givi trunk and i have had it over 100 mph a few times and it does make it handle differant as it would any bike. The only thing i had go bad was one of the head lights burnt out last year. It still has the original battery and i dont keep it charged either. I removed the oddly looking cans back in 05 and replaced them with the two brothers and i also added a K&N air filter. These two upgrades really makes this bike stronger. I have a friend that i ride with sometimes he has a 05 FJR1300. He has installed a full muzzy system with a power comander and K&N air filter. We have over the years ran from a low start to a 140 mph blast side by side and let me tell you that the St kept right beside him the whole way. He is a very experienced rider as well and knows how to ride. This is the best bike i have every owned, its more touring than sport to me but has the power to run sport. What i mean by that is i have rode my friends FJR for many miles, i feel the St is more comfortable to me than his FJR. Dont get me wrong i like his FJR it is a nice bike and when or if i decide to get another bike would probably get a FJR since the St is the same bike and only the color has changed. Yamaha does seem to make improvements over the years to the FJR and Honda has forgetten about improving anything to the ST. The paint seems to scratch easier than i seen on past bikes and road chips on the paint is present on the lower part of the St. Engine whine is loud on this bike and it dont sound like most bikes but once you get by that you can really relax and ride.

I have many years professional riding and my brand new st1300 on Dunlop d220 tyres 42 psi front and rear with screen fully up 110 mph no weave 130 screen down no weaves as hard as I tried it was rock solid  my suspension is set up correctly tyres  and the below statement is not the full story,  did you have 42 psi  front and rear, suspension set right, this bike is a sports touring bike more touring  its not meant o be a GSXR which aslo weaves, as the R1, zx10 ive had the lot   set the pan up and she will be great if you dont like it buy a harley or goldwing or better still get a push bike.

st1300 v st1100

I have always ridden big Yams or BM's for touring and long distance courier work but I found the new FJR1300 a bit of a handfull around town or in 'u' turns so I started to look around for a BMW to replace it, then a mate suggested a PanEuropean. Oh I thought even heavier and juicy with silly service intervals not one for me thankyou.

However, at his insistance I took his St1100 for a long weekend and was quite impressed so was the wife. It handled better than it should for such a monster and I could see why the Old Bill love em. Flickable and nimble as many a sports bike and the even man handling the bike in and out of the garage or on a gravel drive etc it never felt as heavy or awkward as many of its contempories. The engine (while no FJR)  was plenty powerful and very  flexible.

I'll give one ago I thought so I went to the local  Honda agent and asked if I could have a test ride on their 09 demo bike. Take it out for the day he said and I'll have the paperwork waiting when you get back as you'll never want to ride another bike, he quipped confidently. I was back inside twenty minutes must have the suspension set wrong and tyre pressures a bit off I said. Most apologetic the salesman whipped the bike around to the workshop while I had a coffee.

There  you go all set up spot on have a good ride says the man. Okay but it didn't feel any better, but I thought  it is new and I'll give it a chance. NO NO NO this bike was awful the power was snatchy it lurched and baulked, when I eventually got it moving smoothly as soon as I hit 80 it felt as though I had a rear puncture I stopped and checked the pressure, spot on, it was the bike not me, not the road surface, not any cross wind, it just handled like a camel on rollerskates.

I rode back gingerly and told the salesman what I thought he just shrugged and said it might not be your cup of tea. CUP of TEA ! you would need to a pot of magic mushrooms not to notice the faults on this heap, I mean I've ridden Harleys that felt safer !!!!!!!

I was still impressed with the St1100 though and asked my mate if I could use it for a trip to France. He agreed and off I went fully loaded two up and 2,000 miles later I was smitten rushed back and bought a 2001 ST1100 with 30k on the clock. It has now done 58k I serviceit myself, get 50mpg on average and the only thing I shall change is the collector box and down pipes for s/steel ones (cheaper than Honda OE's)

Since riding the Pan I have had several bods come upto me and say they wish they had kept their 1100 as the the new 1300 were crap by comparison.

I can only think that those who profess the 1300 is a good bike either don't ride above the legal limit or have never owned a bike that handles by modern standards.

Before you make any derogatory remarks about my riding ability I'll point out the following.

I have been riding for 40 years on every thing from mopeds to choppers, vintage to ultra modern rocketships,  offroad and speedway bikes. I have covered over a million miles as a courier, never had a serious accident, and yes I regularly speed but only when safe to do so. I think that's enough experience to know a wrong'n when I see one.

Honda ST1300 reviews

We bought an 05 ST1300 ABS with 1100 miles on it. What a great bike! Fantastic quality, great amount of storage and a awesome motor. I read the handling reports and have seen the YouTube video of the police wobble. Having ridden it 2 up and solo with no problems I am at a loss as to what the problem was. I can assume it is related to weight distribution at the rear. I have a Givi V46 top box but only use it for helmet storage. If you keep the heavy luggage down low, it handle fine. This applies to any bike though. Sometime people will look for problems and latch on to what they have heard and make it "their" problem. ST Pans get a bad rap. Mick

May I

say I think it may just be a settings thing mine rides fine and not had a wobble with solo or two up rideing.

I take it you are not doing 80+ with the screen up?

if you want I could come and take you out on mine to put your mine at ease

could be as simple as tyre pressure

or slack head bearings.
