MCN overall verdict rating is 4

With its genuine 163mph top speed, six-piston brakes, low’ish insurance group and evil induction noise the Kawasaki ZX-6R G-series is the bike that overnight made the 750cc superbikes look superfluous. Even today it’s still considered a capable performer, though the suspension and stoppers will doubtless welcome a fettle.

The Kawasaki ZX-6R's DOHC in-line four sounds better with each passing degree of the tacho’s sweep – all the way up to its glorious 14,000rpm redline – as the twin ram-air tubes resonate with the cold fury of quickly shovelled speed. It’s based on the older F-series engine, albeit with revised cams and new 36mm carbs. Carbs that, just like old one, suffer from icing on cold, damp mornings. Pass the Silkolene ProFST, Cyril.

Ride and Handling

MCN rating rating is 4
Owners' rating rating is 4.5

If the Kawasaki ZX-6R's motor begs to be caned, then the chassis begs you to use it. It’s sporty yet comfy, precise but not flighty and roomy but not baggy. It’s a brilliant blend of real world practicality and trackside intent. The six-piston brakes aren’t as harsh as the older ZX-6R’s fours and can be improved with pads for the ZX-9R. The suspension and brakes will need refreshing by now to get the best from the package. Budget on around £200-£300 to do the job properly.

Equipment

MCN rating rating is 3
Owners' rating rating is 4

With the Kawasaki ZX-6R you don’t get a hugger or centrestand. You do get a pillion seat that’s not a dirty joke, and a digital display for water temp, trips and clock, though.

Quality and Reliability

MCN rating rating is 3
Owners' rating rating is 4.5

The Kawasaki ZX-6R's finish is good, but ride your ZX-6R through a winter or keep it outside and it quickly palls with corrosion setting in around the shock if you don’t add a hugger. Electrics can suffer, too, so be generous with the WD40. 1998: Supersedes the ZX-6R F-series. Gains cartridge forks, semi-downdraught carbs and revised frame and motor. 2000: G-series superseded by J-series ZX-6R (new singarm, revised shock, engine and gearbox improvements).

These days there is so much metal to choose from that an aging 600 might not seem like the ideal candidate for your cash. But the G-series Kawasaki ZX-6Rs are still handsome performers providing you overhaul the critical areas of suspension and brakes. Find a Kawasaki ZX-6R for sale.

This is my first bike and it's the best, very quick, handles like a dream and looks the biz. I'm very satisfied and recommend a Ninja to anyone from the beginner to a race nut.

Brill if you want a bike that's between a cbr and an r6 - the zx6r is for you. Fast roads no prob, knackered roads no prob if suspension is set right for you; mine are front pre load 5 lines comp, rebound 2 in from std. back pre load std comp, rebound 2 in from std P.S. I dont carry excess baggage - don't be fooled by those track settings. this set up is fine for me - turns in very fast and is not back breaking on long blasts. Love the sound, looks stunning, lets hope KAWASAKI don't stop making bikes like this with that other firm. zx12r next year!!!!!!!!!.

This is my first motorbike (used to have a moped!) since passing my test on a kawasaki ER-5. The bike is blindingly fast, with the induction roar at 7,000rpm being hypnotic! The bike handles well and is very comfortable to ride. Being 6'1" the bike is one of the most comfortable in the 600 range along with the Honda CBR. The bike is a great learning tool when you stay below the power band, when it then turns into a nutter's machine and you have to have your wits about you!. It's very responsive and a little gem to ride.

THIS IS MY SECOND BIKE AFTER A ZXR 400 SP. OBVIOUSLY THE SP WAS A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT BEAST (VERY NARROW "2 STROKE" STYLE POWERBAND AND VERY UNCOMFORTABLE). THE ZX6R IN COMPARISON IS AN ARMCHAIR WITH EXCELLENT MIDRANGE AND AN EVEN BETTER TOP END RUSH. BASICALLY IT FEELS LIKE A ROLLS ROYCE AFTER THE HARSHNESS OF THE ZXR. THE ONLY THING I FIND THAT LETS IT DOWN ARE THE DUNLOP D204's. OBVIOUSLY WITH ONLY 1800 MILES I'M STILL ON THE ORIGINAL TYRES AND FIND THAT FEEDBACK IS A BIT VAGUE AND THEY'RE SHITE IN THE WET. APART FROM THAT, IT'S EXACTLY WHAT I'M LOOKING FOR IN A BIKE.

Lovely motorcycle, well built, but front brakes not up to the job. Can be difficult to get started when cold, otherwise totally reliable so far.

I love this bike. I had one problem the gears kept crunching when going down, so I adjusted the gear lever and all was well. I sometimes have a pillion and it doesn't really upset the bike to much. The bike is in pristine condition and has given me no real problems.

When I was looking for a sports 600, it was between the GSXR and the ZXR, The ZXR won on looks, and I'm glad I went for it, I like the riding position and power delivery, the induction niose on this bike is something else, the engine appears to be unbustable, finish isn't Honda quality, but its stood up well to all year round riding. Strengths: Looks, Engine. Weaknesses: Carb icing, Dunlops.

Being that this is the first bike I have owned since passing my test in 1998 I have to say I cannot fault it, great for beginners.
