MCN overall verdict rating is 3

On the surface the Rieju does enough to be considered ahead of bikes from more established brands like Honda – with a fast engine and extras like a quickshifter with the R version - but poor build quality and bad handling can’t be ignored.

Engine

MCN rating rating is 4
Owners' rating rating is 4.5

The liquid-cooled single-cylinder Minarelli four-stroke is identical to the engine used in the Yamaha YZF-R125, with the exception of the Rieju using carbs instead of fuel injection which has enabled the Spaniards to squeeze a little more performance out of the motor.

Ride and Handling

MCN rating rating is 2
Owners' rating rating is 3.5

The race rep appeal conveyed by the upside down forks and racy swingarm doesn’t translate into confidence inspiring handling, with a lack of feel and too much weight over the softly sprung front end. On the brakes and tipping in to corners it always feels like the front is going to tuck.

Equipment

MCN rating rating is 4
Owners' rating rating is 4

The RS3 comes with a gear indicator as standard and can be gadget-laden with the £400 R kit which comprises of a race-style quick shifter and auto-blipper that blips the revs on downchanges.

Quality and Reliability

MCN rating rating is 3
Owners' rating rating is 3.5

Despite sharing the Yamaha YZF-R125s engine, it doesn’t share the same build quality. Bodywork is flimsy, the gear linkage poor and clunky, cheap looking clocks, a low screen and mirrors that fold back above 60mph all add to the impression that it wouldn’t last as well as competitors from Honda, Yamaha or Aprilia after a year of hard ownership.

Value

MCN rating rating is 3
Owners' rating rating is 4.5

Whilst being nearly a thousand pounds cheaper (and slightly faster) than the YZF-R125, the Rieju doesn’t have the quality finish or big bike feel of the Yamaha and is more expensive than the well-built and confidence-inspiring Honda CBR125R.

I have had my Rieju from new for 4 months. It's a great little bike to learn to ride on & will pull 70 mph up bluebell hill in chatham in 5th (restricted version). It handles ok & brakes well. Ok the the build quality may not be that of the Yam or Aprillia but its £800 less. You gets what you pays for! Minus points: chain went slack very quickly; handlebars dont have end weights, it needs them; seat removal is awkward and clumsy; can never find the horn. Plus points: Its quick for a 125 four stroke & produces power from low revs; you can ride it like a little race bike, great fun; it looks fantastic, this bike turns heads; its £800 cheaper than a Yam or Aprillia. As for the folding mirrors, I have an allen key that came free with an Ikea flat pack. Send me a S.A.E. and its yours!

Yamaha speed and reliability, fast 50s and 125s have been made and abused in spain since two wheels got engines, mine hits 85 by gps (89 on clock) in most conditions and for on road (never tried on a track) handles great (also easily made full power unlike the Yam or Aprilia)some bolts are not as good quality as my old Aprilia, but at a grand cheaper and faster speed i can live with that!

Spanish Rieju 125

surprised about the handling and flimsey body work comment, last month in Ride magazine it won best overall value 125 in massive group test and in Motorcycle monthly last week raved about the quality being as good as the aprilia and yamaha but nearly a grand less money and much faster!
