Suzuki’s dirt-simple dirt plugger is the bedrock on which green-laning is based. Simple, rugged and cheap the Suzuki DR350 is an easy motorcycle to own forever. It’s got its faults – a poor finish, weedy engine and a few too many kilos, but it’s endearing and enduring. If you're buying a Suzuki DR350, make sure you get a post-1995 electric start version.

By now most Suzuki DR350s will have thinned fork oil and a tired shock – replacing or refreshing these will make a huge difference to the handling. The suspension is very soft even when new – and the Suzuki DR350 wallows in faster corners. Add in knobbly tyres and a pretty indifferent front brake and you soon learn to ride the Suzuki DR350 with plenty in reserve.

On the road the Suzuki DR350 plods along quite nicely and the SOHC single-cylinder motor lets you burp along at a reasonable lick. The gearbox is well thought out on the Suzuki DR350, with clever ratios that work well off-road. Combined with the Suzuki DR350’s modest power output and you’ve got the recipe for an easy to ride motorcycle that’s fun for newer riders.

Next up: Value

The Suzuki DR350's essentials are pretty well brilliant – the motor is good for 50,000 miles or more, the suspension wears well and there’s precious little to damage in a drop. When eyeing up a Suzuki DR350 for a potential purchase, check the downpipes and frame for rust and the spokes for soundness.

Cracking value. Suzuki DR350s can be snapped up for under a grand these days and you probably won’t lose a cent on the deal. Look for a late model Suzuki DR350 with all its OE road gear, avoid anything with a noisy ‘race’ can. It might sound great, but it won’t win you any friends when you’re out on the trails. Find a Suzuki DR350 for sale.

5 out of 5 Slugger!
20 September 2019 by K B Johnson

Version: Suzuki DR350 S "1990"

Year: 1992

It's done exactly what I wanted it too!!!! No electric start for them cold mornings, but that was fixed with the pumper carb removed in place of a flat slide!! Really recommend this to any/all buying this model used. It has made a huge difference in throttle response and starting!!

Ride quality & brakes 4 out of 5

It's an oversized scooter for me.

Engine 5 out of 5

Made for longevity. No problems. It's got the power curve that is needed for both trail and street.

Reliability & build quality 5 out of 5

It's got really, really low miles for being 30 years old. Less than 10,000. I originally bought this for short jaunts, and as a backup to get me around. It's been off road & on the freeway. It's just a great motorcycle that can really take some abuse. This is a great bike to learn on for a beginner.

Value vs rivals 5 out of 5

More for parts that have sun damage from American SW?

Equipment 4 out of 5

The turn signals by modern standards are outdated. Since Iv'e owned the bike have constantly replaced them due to size. Switched to smaller blinkers and still break em. Will fab bracket covers for them in the future for no more simple breaks on the stems.

Buying experience: Bought new from the dealer!!

Good all round bike. Good off road & on.

Ride quality & brakes 4 out of 5

It's 4.5 off road & 3.5 on road, so ave 4 out 5. With bigger bikes in garage, I still choose this 1. Yes the brakes are adequate, handling ok, if soft sprung and trials tires on road are ok. It's also a bit tallto get leg over. (I'm 5'10" , with 32" leg), ok once sitting on. Leg over seems more of an issue now I'm 56. U can get lowering struts 4 rear. But it's simple, easy, go anywhere nature makes it so nice to ride. Genuine 70 mpg. The tank is small though, so typically 100miles before refuel ( there are larger after market plastic tanks available). You won't want 2 ride 100 miles without a break. It's just annoying if U commute say 50 miles each way...you'll need 2 refuel daily

Engine 4 out of 5

Low down power. This isn't a high revving machine. I think 60mph roughly 6000rpm. I've stage 3 the carb jets & race can by predator. Bit noisy but seemed a good idea 16yrs back. Does sound good. Lile a single should, but can get annoyong on a long run. Gearbox sweet. Clutch relatively light (cable operated).

Reliability & build quality 3 out of 5

The finish isn't brilliant, paint on frame flakes etc. But the overall bike is very solid & reliable. I've had mine 20yrs.

Value vs rivals 5 out of 5

Oil & filter change. U really can do this yourself. Plug change, air filter replacement etc. All cheap and easy for a novice DIYer. Lots pf videos on line 2 help you.

Equipment 4 out of 5

By 2days stds, possibly 3/5 But don't read it as bad. Speedo with trip counter, tacho, neutral, high beam & indicator warning lights. Ave, to poor 12v lights. No traction control or AND. But it's very reliable. Narrow seat (It's a trials seat) and not long, so cramped for 2 up riding. Ok for 2 up on local trips.

Buying experience: Bought privately through mcn, 11 months old with 370miles on clock. Was like new. Thought I paid tpp price at time...but ive had my monies worth & some since. They are going for £2500 in used, tidy condition today. Mingers for £1k.

I think it's a bike that you have to own to appreciate, simple reliable good enough off road good enough on road easy to maintain. Only trouble is finding parts as certain stuff is getting expensive. And you can't get one for under a grand anymore worth having.

Ride quality & brakes 3 out of 5

Does everything at a medium level. You don't really need more for what it's used for.

Engine 3 out of 5

Plods along nicely. Sit at 60 mph with ease I have got up to 80 mph on it but on nobblies any more I would of needed to change my trousers.

Great mechanically but the is some rust here and there. Saying that it's a 22 year old green lantern.

5 out of 5 Only bike i need!
20 May 2018 by Dave

Year: 1993

I was sceptacle when trading for my recently new 93 dr350, as id heard of lacking power, susp and possible engine failer due to counter balance pins.... After getting used to the bike on my property, i went for my first trail ride along with an older cr500 and late model yz250. Both other riders were very impressed with how the dr could handle in tight corners with the on demand torque as well as the impressive top end on longer straights. My 190lb 6' frame had no issues through woops 3/4gear, picking the front wheel with very little effort. Not to mention during 2 fill ups of their bikes, the dr350 only used 1/2 a tank! Im very happy with my dr and would recommend one to anyone who was looking for a very trail worthy, dependable, torque filled gas sipper!!

This bike is a joy of an all rounder. Spend some money upgrading things only a bit and it's a bike that could take you around the world. It's a owner-mechanic's dream. Easy to work on and maintain. BUT . . .

Ride quality & brakes 4 out of 5

It is what it says on the tin . . . an average all rounder, so don't expect a performance bike. But with minor modifications and upgrades, you'd be surprised what this bike can do and feel like. Front brake is definitely undersized for road riding, but off road it's fine.

Engine 4 out of 5

The engine is smooth and sweet for a single piston. But it's slightly under powered. Put in a 440 big bore kit and performance exhaust and it changes the entire bike. This is what Suzuki should have done and kept the model going.

Reliability & build quality 3 out of 5

There is one big flaw with the DR350 - the counterbalance driven gear pin! On some models, instead of a stepped recess for the pin, they drilled the hole the same size all the way through. This allows the registration pin to move away from the gear and the gear now moves freely and BAM!!! . . . The counterbalance shaft is driven out the front of the engine case and oil everywhere. At minimum, you would have to pull the cylinder head to identify whether you had this problem or not. I didn't do that and 27,000km into a great upgraded bike and it exploded on me. There is information on this issue on the web, so look it up if you own one or are thinking of owning one. That said, I'd buy another if I had to, but I'd pull the cylinder to make sure the problem doesn't exist. I was lucky it happened at slow speed on a back road and not the freeway! Other than this potentially disastrous manufacturing flaw, the bike is bulletproof. Also, try and find another bike that has grease-nipples! That alone make this a "real bike".

Value vs rivals 5 out of 5

I'd say with oil, tires, brakes and chain, the average cost for annual maintenance is $300 - $500. Parts are inexpensive compared to other bikes, but getting more and more difficult to source.

Equipment 4 out of 5

With a rack and side panniers, this bike is a great adventure bike. But it's difficult to find accessories. I custom made a rack for hard cases and regularly take it on week long or more camping trips.

All around great bike. Street (around town) and trails no problem! Extremely reliable.

Ride quality & brakes 4 out of 5

Street to find that trail, or just run light errands. Bike is all around reliable (my first enduro), but picked this one for a reason. Power to weight ratio for a street legal is great. Feels like a heavier dirtbike, but not a street bike at all.

Engine 3 out of 5

Could have more power, but certainly reliable. Maybe I'll get a pipe and change this score. Just got a K&N but haven't tested yet. Might be better already....

Reliability & build quality 4 out of 5

Header pipe corroded first, but kind of expected. Every piece on this bike comes off with 2 bolts (10 or 12mm) or phillips screwdriver. It's so easy to clean any corrosion, paint, etc. Normal wear and tear, but nothing specific. Very easy and cheap to fix anything.

Value vs rivals 5 out of 5

Change the oil/filter, check/change spark plug, battery tender, clean air filter and the bike is fine....Doesn't need much. I got a larger plastic tank, grips; 20 years, still starts at the touch of a button, even after 3 months winterized (from NYC). Changed brake pads after 3k miles; didn't need it, just something to do!

Equipment 4 out of 5

I bought used from a dirtbike adult (several bikes in the garage). He had it tuned for trails, and it's nice. Bought a bigger plastic tank, grips. Not much needed. 20 year old carb is getting rebuilt as we speak (sat for 1.5 years and I think all the rubber seals are screwed, and may as well get new jets).

5 out of 5 not bad.

good little bike. very rugged and always ready! a very good way into off roading. i own a 91 enduro spec model with the plastic tank ect, kick start only. this can be a problem if you stall it. engine is a little ender-powered but im going to change the rear sprocket so this may improve things. easy to work on (always a bonus!) had the bike in some very precariouse positions and never let me down. overall a good little bike. try one.

I bought a 1996 DR350SE this spring. I am a Honda guy and had a XL350R Honda. The Honda did not look Gay, had better fit and finish, & handled better. Having said that. I like the Suzuki much better. The suzuki delivers 60 MPG's and I weigh 250 lbs, the suspesion aint bad, I defagged it taking off the purple and pink graphics and painting the yellow saddle and fork boots black. The best part over the Honda, it starts with the push of a button. I love that. The Honda would take 3 proimer kicks, then stall then kick some more. The Suzuli fires in one revolution of the piston. I have just over 1000 miles on it and rate it a good solid bike. Its a keeper.
