Suzuki’s dirt-simple dirt plugger is the bedrock on which green-laning is based. Simple, rugged and cheap the Suzuki DR350 is an easy motorcycle to own forever. It’s got its faults – a poor finish, weedy engine and a few too many kilos, but it’s endearing and enduring. If you're buying a Suzuki DR350, make sure you get a post-1995 electric start version.

On the road the Suzuki DR350 plods along quite nicely and the SOHC single-cylinder motor lets you burp along at a reasonable lick. The gearbox is well thought out on the Suzuki DR350, with clever ratios that work well off-road. Combined with the Suzuki DR350’s modest power output and you’ve got the recipe for an easy to ride motorcycle that’s fun for newer riders.

By now most Suzuki DR350s will have thinned fork oil and a tired shock – replacing or refreshing these will make a huge difference to the handling. The suspension is very soft even when new – and the Suzuki DR350 wallows in faster corners. Add in knobbly tyres and a pretty indifferent front brake and you soon learn to ride the Suzuki DR350 with plenty in reserve.

The Suzuki DR350's essentials are pretty well brilliant – the motor is good for 50,000 miles or more, the suspension wears well and there’s precious little to damage in a drop. When eyeing up a Suzuki DR350 for a potential purchase, check the downpipes and frame for rust and the spokes for soundness.

Cracking value. Suzuki DR350s can be snapped up for under a grand these days and you probably won’t lose a cent on the deal. Look for a late model Suzuki DR350 with all its OE road gear, avoid anything with a noisy ‘race’ can. It might sound great, but it won’t win you any friends when you’re out on the trails. I bought a 1996 DR350SE this spring. I am a Honda guy and had a XL350R Honda. The Honda did not look Gay, had better fit and finish, & handled better. Having said that. I like the Suzuki much better. The suzuki delivers 60 MPG's and I weigh 250 lbs, the suspesion aint bad, I defagged it taking off the purple and pink graphics and painting the yellow saddle and fork boots black. The best part over the Honda, it starts with the push of a button. I love that. The Honda would take 3 proimer kicks, then stall then kick some more. The Suzuli fires in one revolution of the piston. I have just over 1000 miles on it and rate it a good solid bike. Its a keeper.
