This is Moto Morini’s answer to the BMW R1200GS. The Italian-built machine, which is powered by a big, booming V-twin motor has a 19” front wheel for off-road action and a roomy riding position, but it’s very racy. Instant acceleration is akin to a big supermoto and with its firm, top-quality suspension it’s agile and stable in the corners. It’s not the comfiest, but it’s one of the most fun adventure bikes your can buy. One of the only drawbacks, which is a pretty big one, is the current health of the troubled Moto Morini company.

Although roomy, the combination of hard seat and firm suspension means you’ll be stopping for respite long before the fuel runs out in the big 27-litre tank. Handling is good, but the suspension is on the firm side for the road. With its off-road-style 19” front wheel and dual purpose tyres it’s not as sure-footed as a machine with dedicated road tyres and a 17” front wheel.

The Granpasso is powered by a 118bhp liquid-cooled, 1187cc, 87° V-twin engine with six gears. It sounds great, is packed with loads of low-down grunt and cruising along at 90mph motorways speeds the motor purrs along at 5000rpm. It has lots of outright get-up-and-go, enough to make the Granpasso feel more like a sportsbike.

Build quality is very good and we’ve heard no horror stories about reliability. We’ve knocked a point off for the question mark over parts availability from the struggling firm.

5 out of 5 13 years old and still going strong.

Year: 2009

I've had this bike now for 13 years and completed over 40000 miles in all weathers. I keep looking, but I haven't come across a bike I would swap for this.

Ride quality & brakes 5 out of 5

The seat is all day comfortable and is also great for pillions, with plenty of space even with a top box on. The suspension is on the sporty side - the forks are not adjustable. I've used it on a track day, where it has enough performance to overtake sports bikes in the bends (definitely more the bike than me) and handles like a big supermoto. It can do anything, but is much better on twisty roads than going for flat out speed. The width and height of the bars makes filtering difficult.

Engine 5 out of 5

Huge amounts of torque and a great engine note with the standard exhaust.nYou never need to worry about overtakes. I'm not a good enough rider to use all it's performance.

Reliability & build quality 4 out of 5

Ohlins rear suspension, Excel rims, Brembo brakes all come as standard. However, finding places to complete significant services has been a mixed bag as most mechanics are unfamiliar with the bike. Routine servicing has been fine, although I have needed to source some parts myself. The biggest issue was a poor stock engine map causing stalling and running too lean. A visit to BSD tuning in Peterborough resolved this. The wheels are not great with tubeless tyres, as they slowly leak air. This is easily fixed with inner tubes.

Value vs rivals 5 out of 5

Typically 40-44 mpg on a variety of rides. The timing chain replacement services every 25000 miles are labour intensive and consequently expensive, but that is pretty decent interval. Given it's age, I also avoid using E10 fuel.

Equipment 4 out of 5

A huge 27L tank means 200 miles before you even start thinking about a petrol station. Brembos and an Ohlins rear as standard. Unadjustable Marzocchi forks. Mine came with the optional 180 section rear wheel. No USB charging point, and no fuel gauge, which should really be present on a bike as touring capable as this (although the warning light comes on with 1/3 of a tank left). It comes with switches for heated grips and auxilliary lights already incorporated into the switchgear and a display on the dash showing the heated grip setting. Multi-function display, operated from a button on the switchgear. No engine modes or ABS. The screen is manually adjustable whilst riding. Stock indicators are poor in daylight.

5 out of 5 Every Ride is a Proper Event!!

If you're a worrier...go elsewhere but accept you've missed a 'proper' italian specimen.

Ride quality & brakes 5 out of 5

I don't know what MCN were riding to reflect the testers comments but it wasn't a Granpasso. Need to run Dunlop Roadsmart 3's front & rear & lift footrests as always on the deck. Braking is top notch, as you'd expect.

Engine 5 out of 5

A monster that needs a Mark Bruin remap to realise true manageability & stop the random low rev stalling that earlier models suffered from. 54mm throttle bodies dictate you hold on proper.....or they may ingest YOU😳!!

Reliability & build quality 4 out of 5

Knocked 1 off for unsealable tubeless tyre/rim arrangement...definitely didn't think that one through!

Value vs rivals 5 out of 5

Unquantifiable as this is a very different animal to an everyday ride. It can be used everyday if desired but the servicing tasks effectively fall on the owner as dealer network is non-existent but if it wasn't, the service costs would be stiff I feel. I've owned mine from new, it now has 55,000 miles on it and goes the same as Day 1. But...a twin timing chain replacement by any dealer would require you sell your granny!!

Equipment 5 out of 5

All you need standard as riding a GP just needs a proper wrist. No electronic BS fitted...none reqd!

Buying experience: Stuart at the now closed NLM was The Man for decades. I paid £10600 OTR in May 2009 with a factory pannier kit. And the bike, luggage and me & wifey have given Europe a good go every year since (The Vid accepted of course). More recently..Ben Wylie of MotoHub is the man to go to and excellent!

underestimated superb bike with build quality ahead of competition, low weight, huge tank, good parts, brilliant steel frame and looks that stand out without being overboard.

Ride quality & brakes 5 out of 5

Comfy, well set up and easy to improve if wanted to, can go everywhere road or off it with ease without using any electronic aids just your wrist. Done just over 2000 miles in 23 hours and my bum was still fresh and willing to do more

Engine 5 out of 5

Effortless and easy to handle by the wrist which I like, don't need to be revved to go, but if revved then you get the push. Engine clime revs with ease and effortlessly which makes you feel good on tarmac and off road.

Reliability & build quality 5 out of 5

No corrosion, no failures, most parts can get from other brands

Value vs rivals 5 out of 5

Bike makes you feel like it is built by enthusiasts not business people

Equipment 5 out of 5

Heated grips as standard, big tank 27 litres, comfy seat for 2, anti hopping, frame that will still be good decades later.

5 out of 5 A hidden gem

A big torquey super moto/tourer, its all about the engine ( made in house) and excellent balance. Rare in the UK but parts easily obtainable and servicing from the ex-dealer network. Goes like a train, nimble as a ballerina. I tried many GS's (felt detached from the road), KTM Adventure 1190 (not bad) and a Multistrada (engine felt thin) before buying. I owned a Scrambler by Morini before (same engine) and only sold it as the pegs were too high for me.

Ride quality & brakes 5 out of 5

Brembo brakes ( non ABS on my 2013) and huge discs bring it to rest easily. Massively adjustable Ohlins shock is great.

Engine 5 out of 5

The star of the show - torquey, revvy, its everything a GS isn't. Awesome. KTM comes closest but isn't as hairy-chested.

Reliability & build quality 4 out of 5

Dash unit can be a bit temperamental

Ohlins shock, excel rims, brembo...specced well. I have heated grips, a slipper clutch and two Givi hard luggage.

Buying experience: I bought mine used from the factory, imported it myself and registered it with the DVLA

Don't buy this bike if you don't like people gawping and asking questions. Faster than my 1050 speed triple i previously owned ,comfy riding/pillion position. sounds fantastic, not to loud ,you will grin.7thou service interval regardless of time .oozing quality components. very well built/hand made.very reliable not let me down yet .negative points 1 or 2 minor niggles like any other bike ,fuel reserve light & leaky tyre valves.lots of common parts, only exclusive bits might be tricky getting hold of in future if MM go under . MM has been in never never land of liquidation for over 16 months.but will surly be a classic bike .Highly recommended
