It’s been a long time since new models from Moto Guzzi were anything to get excited about and although there’s nothing radical or inspiring about the Bellagio, and it’s still mostly been assembled by raiding the parts bins, for a roadster/cruiser it’s undeniably stylish, well-equipped, has a fruity motor, fun handling and is good value, too.

The Moto Guzzi Bellagio is far better than your average custom. The Bellagio has decent suspension, brakes and tyres, steers sweetly yet is comfortable and smooth and is a pleasure to hustle around. It’ll run rings around a Harley Sportster, for example.

Outwardly nothing new, but the Moto Guzii Bellagio's 940 displacement gives the lie. Based on the smaller (and now modernised with Guzzi’s CARC anti-reaction shaft drive plus glitchless fuel injection) the big bore V-twin manges that rare feat of being both flexible and zesty. A peach, albeit a heavy one.

Just a few years ago Guzzi’s quality was rightly damned and their reliability wasn’t much to shout about either – that’s all changed under, firstly Aprilia and no Piaggio ownership. Quality of the Moto Guzzi Bellagio is up there with (almost) the best from Italy and recent bikes have had no reliability woes worth mentioning.

At first glance the Moto Guzzi Bellagio is nothing special. And the bulbous tank is a love/hate affair. Get beyond those, howevere, and the Bellagio is corking value – as long as you can persuade yourself to resist the Harley badge. Find a Moto Guzzi Bellagio 940 for sale.

Despite a fairly Spartan outlook, peer closer and you can’t fail to be impressed by the quality of the components of the Moto Guzzi Bellagio: Alloy rimmed Excel wire wheels; beefy Brembo brakes, quality Marzocchi suspension plus quality switchgear, instruments and mirrors adds up to a classy package.

5 out of 5 The bike Guzzi should have made

I got my Bellagio with 25000km on it and did 16000 on it before regretfully selling it. (Moving overseas, can only take one home with me and the bella was th $ensible one to sell.) Ive owned around 100 bikes and the Bella is my favourite! It has a very sporty engine that just loves to be thrashed, tons of torque and great around town or on the highway. It was my 2nd Guzzi, the first being a Cali Jackal which I love and still own. The bella was bought with the intention of converting to a cafe racer, and that,s what i did. Look me up on you tube, for a look at it. Calijackalbob. The bellagio is perfect with clip ons and V7 tank and seat. Its character is much more a racer than a cruiser! This bike accelerates frantically, though there is a slight lag before take off from a standstill. It corners beautifully and the brakes are excellent. Bumps mid corner never unsettle the bike which continues holding its line as if it were on rails. Worst feature, the bodywork belies its true spirit. This bike shouldnt wear a California cruiser tank and seat. It needs something cooler and sportier, low clip on bars and bar end mirrors, a v7 tank and seat fit like a glove and ìf comments on my bike are to be believed, "this is the bike Guzzi should have made!"

A slight lag in accelleration from standstill, but otherwise, urgent and rapid throttle response. If i had to describe it in one word, it would be "Exhilerating"

Reliability & build quality 5 out of 5

The previous owner and i left the bike outside for a decade under a dust cover during singapore monsoon rains and 99% humidity, needless to say there was some corrosion, but nowhere near what might be expected. Changing some rusty bolts and washers to stainless and the OEM plastic signals to alloy ones fixed all the corrosion. The battery died as well as the rectifier, which was acceptable on a ten year old bike. Other than that, ive replaced a few bulbs and fuses. Nothing more.

Value vs rivals 4 out of 5

I have spent a lot on servicing, mostly because its virtually impossible to do it yourself in singapore, no garage, living in a flat,.... but most of it was done for the reciepts and preventative maintainance. Could have done it cheaply if i had a garage.

Equipment 5 out of 5

Fully adjustable suspension, once its right, its perfect. Handles beautifully. There was a time when the handling was a bit dodgy, due to mismatched tyres, but when i put a new matching pair on it, (metzlers) it was better than ever! Next time i need to çhange a rear tyre, ill be getting a new matching front tyre, regardless of whether it has a few thousand km left on it. There is nothing like two new matching tyres! (Its rare that they both Need replacing at the same time, but well worth doing both at once.)

Buying experience: Bought privately from the first owner, who had sellers remorse and promptly bought a new Guzzi, a V7. I regret selling it. If there werent a dozen other Guzzis id love to own and experience, id buy another Bellagio as soon as i get home to Aus. But as Guzzis are rare, and hard to come by, the first Guzzi i see, ill buy. Fingers crossed its my dream bike, a sport 1100, but if its a Bellagio, the romance will be renewed.

Seat height is a little low for me. Could be a bonus for some one else. Sound of the standard pipes is quiet. Changed completely with a set of Mistral performance pipes.

600 miles was the longest trip on the bike. Mine had the luxury comfort seat. It is a comfortable bike with a relaxed seating position. Handling in the beginning was terrible until I found some one had altered the settings. Putting them back to standard and then changing a couple of notches improved it dramatically. Brembo brakes could not be faulted.

Engine 5 out of 5

The engine is great as it is so simple to service. Tappets are easy to adjust with no tools. Twin fuel injection. Air filters easy to get to. Only the oil filter which you have to take the sump off takes a little time. I researched Moto Guzzis and found several sites with older models that had done over 250000 miles. On a standard engine. I think taking the sump off aids to making sure the engine is clean of any foreign build up.I have an older California II 1982 and its engine looks the same as the bellagio

Reliability & build quality 5 out of 5

It failed on a blown fuse and a dirty battery connection. It would be hard to mark it down on items that are normal service items. The actual bike started on the press of the button in all weathers.

Value vs rivals 5 out of 5

Value and Running costs on the bike were very low. I maintained the bike myself and carried out servicing. The dealer serviced it before I took it away and I carried out two services. Only the cost of air filters, oil filters, rocker gaskets, diff oil etc was changed. Very simple to service as the tappets do not need any special tools.

Equipment 5 out of 5

I would have liked a rev counter all though it is the type of bike that you do not need one. Mine came with the Moto Guzzi oem leather saddle bags and did not like wet weather but looked great and was very handy with the inserts that just pulled out.

Buying experience: I bought from a dealer. I could not haggle as they sold as quick as they advertised. I think if you have one they will be appreciating in value as there are not many of them. When I advertised mine for sale it was sold very quickly

4 out of 5 Quality problems???

Otherwise ok and nice to drive but the speedo / odometer does not work in the rain. Factory says they are sorry but nothing can be done even if there is a factory warranty valid for the bike. A bit confusing attitude?

I purchased the Bellagio new in the spring and it is my 1st Guzzi. All I can say is wow what a great bike. Bought primarily for a sunny sunday afternoon cruise the bike is so much more than that. Superb engine, which, through the twin exhausts sounds just fantastic and makes you want to rev it hard. It also has the handling and brakes to match. All the components are good quality and the riding position is relaxed. recently did 600 miles on the bike in 24 hours on a mix of motorway and mountain roads and it handled everything really well. Although naked it was very comfortable on the motorway at 80-85 ish and the saddle is very comfortable. Tank range is 170 miles+ (although anoyingly the fuel light comes on at about 130 miles)and I very easily managed full 150 mile+ motorway stints non stop without any discomfort. In the mountains it was great fun with really good handling. If you want the looks of a cruiser but the handling and comfort of a sport tourer this bike ticks a lot of boxes. I have also not yet seen another one on the road so you get exclusivity as well!! So far it's been very reliable so would happily recomend and can now see what all the fuss is about when you meet fanatical Guzzi owners!!
