Aprilia SR Max 125 (2011-current)

£3,599

124cc, 15bhp, mph, Insurance group

The SR Max 125 is a nice little city scooter, with bags of weather protection and comfort for longer journeys. Struggles at speeds above 40mph, but at town speeds it's perfectly adequate. Handling is spot on. If you want an all year round scoot with good wether protection the SR Max 125 is a great choice.

Piaggio MP3 Yourban 125 (2011-current)

£4,820

124cc, 15bhp, mph, Insurance group

The Yourban 125 is certainly not cheap, but you can't put a price on confidenc, which is exactly what the extra front wheel gives. The 300cc version is less than £1000 more expensive, has more power and can be ridden on a car licence.

Suzuki Burgman 125 (2002-current)

£3,465

125cc, 12bhp, 65mph, Insurance group 5

If you want the comfort and practicality of a maxi-scooter but you’re limited to 125cc, the well-spec’d Burgman is a safe choice. It’s not quite up to a motorway commute, but for city use it’s a classy ride with more luggage space than you’ll know what to do with.

Piaggio MP3 250 (2007-current)

£4,199

244cc, 22.5bhp, 80mph, Insurance group 7

The Piaggio MP3 is mind-bending – not because of its speed, but because of how much confidence an extra front wheel affords. It opens motorcycling up to a new, safety-conscious commuter audience who wouldn’t ride a motorcycle.

Aprilia Atlantic 500 (2002-2006)

£4,349

460cc, 37bhp, 100mph, Insurance group 8

The Aprilia Atlantic 500 is somewhat boat-like as super scooters go, and heavy with it, but the Atlantic is nevertheless remarkably sprightly. 2005’s updates modernised the look and updated the frame and suspension. The Aprilia Atlantic 500 is roomy, stable, practical, rides well with great brakes and lots of nice little touches. Even hardcore bikers could have fun on this.
