Ariel Ace (2014-current)

£20,000

1237cc, 170bhp, 150mph, Insurance group 17

Ariel has more recently been known for producing quirky-looking space-framed Atom sports cars with fearsome power to weight ratios and superbike levels of acceleration. But now they’re back making bikes. The Ace is a modular concept, so you can have any style you want from the cruiser shown here, to a super naked. Build quality is superb, it comes with ...

Indian Roadmaster (2014-current)

£21,999

1811cc, 100bhp, 137mph, Insurance group 17

‘Full-dress’ version of the Chieftain tourer launched a year ago achieves what it set out to in out-luxo-ing and out-performing Harley’s Electra Glide. That said, Indians are relatively unproven and the latest Project Rushmore Harleys are a vast improvement, so it’s close.

Yamaha XVS1300 Custom (2014-current)

£8,999

1304cc, 72bhp, 110mph, Insurance group 12

Yamaha’s XVS1300 Custom off-the-peg chopper is a rebadged Yamaha Stryker, originally released in the US in 2011. It mixes ‘American Chopper’ styling with bomb-proof Yamaha build quality. Badge snobs might sneer at its lack of ‘Harleyness’ but it’s a capable machine and superb value for money.

Ducati 1199 Superleggera (2014)

£54,000

1198cc, 200bhp, 186mph, Insurance group 17

Based on the homologation-special Panigale R, the 200bhp Superleggera (‘super light’ in Italian) weighs just 155kg dry, or 166kg wet with no fuel, which is the same as the Bologna firm’s WSB racer. Ducati has created 200 shiny new parts for this most exclusive slice of exotica, including a magnesium frame and wheels, a carbon fibre seat unit, a bucket-full ...

Honda VFR800F (2014-current)

£10,499

782cc, 105bhp, 150mph, Insurance group

In delivering refined versatility, class and understated quality and entertainment, this new VFR is a success. My only slight regrets are two-fold: this newcomer doesn’t (quite) have the clean sheet, no expense-spared ethos of the originals, it’s a tiny bit ‘parts-bin’. And, two, it’d have been better still if it’d been a VFR900F, say, with a full colour TPFT instrument ...

Kymco CK1 (2014-current)

£1,999

125cc, 10bhp, 65mph, Insurance group

Like those Japanese rivals, the CK1 is a fairly stylish air-cooled, four-stroke single. Unlike them, it costs under two grand. All-new commuter aims to fill the gap between cheap and cheerful Chinese offerings and more proven, pricier, Japanese ones. It succeeds, too, being well-specced, stylish and well priced. Not perfect, it arguably delivers the best of both worlds.

Honda CBR650F (2014-current)

£6,999

649cc, 86bhp, 145mph, Insurance group

Honda’s all-new, completely revitalised and reinvented CBR is a CBR worthy of the name. The original CBR was such as success simply because it was a good, affordable, all-round bike, with a touch of Honda class. Just as much is true of this newcomer. It’s not perfect – no bike is. The snob in me envies the adjustable forks of ...

Triumph America LT (2014-current)

£7,999

865cc, 60bhp, 125mph, Insurance group 10

Though by definition a ‘smaller bagger’ it’s not really a small bike. It’s manageable, yes, but is sufficiently full sized to carry two and luggage and tour hundreds of miles with ease. The LT also has enough style, comfort, performance and practicality and yet is still a doddle to get on with, as well. And, for the type of riders ...

Norton Domiracer (2014)

£26,000

961cc, 80bhp, 125mph, Insurance group

New Nortons don’t come along very often, especially ones with featherbed frames and looks like this. That is in enough in itself for the Domiracer to be considered special. The fact that it's 83% British with much of it (frame, tank, pipes, engine and final assembly) all done on site at Donington, is another big plus. Then there’s the look ...

KTM RC390 (2014-current)

£4,999

373cc, 44bhp, 105mph, Insurance group 15

This is a bike for A2 licence holders to be excited about. Inspired by KTM’s Moto3 machine, you could say the RC 390 is the modern day RD350LC. With its punchy single-cylinder engine, steel trellis frame, ali swingarm and fat, sticky tyres, it has easy ton-up performance, lets you rail through corners like Jack Miller and is built with lots ...
