Vespa GTS125 (2007-current)

£3,549

124cc, 15bhp, mph, Insurance group

You get all the style and cool of an original Vespa, wrapped up in a package with modern reliability and running gear. If you're commute is primarily on busy city roads the engine and handling are spot on. But the GTS struggles out on the open road.

Kymco KR Sport 125 (2010-current)

£2,599

124cc, 13bhp, 68mph, Insurance group

A very decent sporty 125 with great equipment and good handling that’s let down by an inflated price tag. Those that need a cheap runaround will opt for a Chinese-made budget equivalent, while performance obsessed young ‘uns will go for the pricier CBR125R or a YZF-R125. If you find yourself in possession of a KR Sport or can nab a ...

Derbi GP-1 250 Racing (2006-current)

£2,999

cc, 22bhp, 82mph, Insurance group

When you hear the spec of the Derbi GP1 250 Racing scooter it’s easier to think of a proper motorcycle rather than a funky-looking twist-and-go scooter. It’s got radial brakes, earlier versions had a single rear shock and it even has a twin-spar aluminium chassis too. This is about as cool-looking as it gets in the 250cc scooter market.

Derbi GP-1 125 Racing (2006-current)

£2,495

124cc, 14bhp, 65mph, Insurance group

This is the middle capacity in the GP-1 Derbi range and when you hear the spec of the Derbi GP1 125 Racing scooter it’s easier to think of a proper motorcycle rather than a funky-looking twist-and-go scooter. It’s got radial brakes, earlier versions had a single rear shock and it even has a twin-spar aluminium chassis too.

Buell XB9SX Lightning (2004-2009)

£5,990

984cc, 84bhp, 120mph, Insurance group

The Buell XB9SX is an oddity. What you get is an old-school v-twin in a high-tech chassis, all wrapped up in a mad-max style urban scrambler. On paper it makes very little sense – a modern naked middleweight out-performs it in every practical way. But it looks great, sounds mean and the handling is sublime. It would be a hard ...

Peugeot Satelis 125 (2006-current)

£3,199

125cc, 15bhp, 67mph, Insurance group 4

Peugeot’s luxury-learner scooter is an ideal tool for the well-heeled provisional licence holder – it’s well-equipped, nicely made and rides well. It’s not so good out of town, but then few 125s are really.

Aprilia Mana GT (2009-current)

£8,174

839cc, 76bhp, 120mph, Insurance group 13

The £6999 Mana 850 GT ABS is a clever bike and so much more than just a motorcycle with a big scooter engine. The new fairing and ABS add an extra layer of practicality and safety to a package which seems ordinary on paper, and a bit dull to look at, admittedly, but the Mana 850 GT ABS is absolutely ...

Piaggio X7 250ie (2008-current)

£2,999

244cc, 22bhp, 80mph, Insurance group 7

The Piaggio X7 250 ie is halfway between a full-on maxi scooter and a lightweight city scooter, so in theory should offer comfort and a bit of class with some traffic busting ability. It manages it too – it feels substantial and quality but slices traffic like a 50cc scooter.

Piaggio MP3 400 (2008-current)

£5,349

398cc, 34bhp, 95mph, Insurance group

The largest incarnation of the Piaggio MP3 retains the same reassuring all-weather grip and stability afforded by the third wheel, but with more power for motorway cruising. It’s no Goldwing, but if your daily commute mixes town work with high-speed open roads, this could be the motorcycle you’re looking for.

Rieju SMX 125 (1997-current)

£2,799

124cc, 14.5bhp, 65mph, Insurance group 5

The Rieju SMX 125 and 50 models are Supermoto styled bikes aimed at novices, with the 125 featuring a 14bhp Yamaha engine, Paioli suspension and a tall seat height. The 50cc SMX Pro version also has trick bits like Galfer wavy dics and a chromed exhaust system. Just that bit more stylish than the average learner bike.
