Suzuki Burgman 400

The last bike I bought, a hold-over model from the previous year, a 2008. It changed my mind about these kinds of "scooters". The handling was amazing, brakes were terrific and it had more power than those KZ440s I had. Very comfortable, and it would do 70mph all day, getting 65mpg while doing it. My first bike with fuel injection...I didn't miss carburetors. The new Urals have FI now, maybe I should look into getting a new one of those. The Burgman surprised me in every way, so it's not fair to call it a "scooter".

Close-up of my KZ440LTD.

The last 440 I had, a close-up of the engine and such. Battery acid had gotten all over the back of the bike and engine, exhaust, etc. It needed a lot of elbow-grease and polishing compounds to get the acid damage and oxidation off the aluminum, but it turned out pretty good. You can't even see the dent that was in the tank. I didn't fill it with Bondo, either. I made a special pick to get inside the tank so I could tap the dent out. It took me 3 months to do the tear-down, get parts, and put ...

1988 GL1500m w/Lehman conversion

My girlfriend Judi and I on one of our motorcycle camping trips. This was taken in the Cascade mountains in Washington state. She was the perfect pillion girl. No matter the weather, she never complained. She was so happy to be on the GL with me, riding all over. When I met her, she didn't have any riding gear at all. But we went around and I helped her get some women-sized gear so she'd be comfortable in different weather conditions. She spent her own money buying her kit, all I had to do was show her the good stuff.

1988 GL1500

With my physical condition degenerating, I thought I'd try a 3-wheeler. I got this GL from a guy in Illinois, only 22,000 miles on it. A guy from the GWRRA that was local to him helped me with shipping, and I had it delivered to my place in Tacoma, WA. I bought a conversion kit from Lehman, had that shipped to me from Canada, and spent two weekends installing it. What a great piece of kit that Lehman was. Solid, built like a tank. I was worried about going to a 3-wheeler, the usual guy-ego thing, but it was great. ...

My 3rd and final KZ440LTD

With 48,000 miles on my second 440, it was time to look for another one and keep the old one for a parts bike. I found this one in a girl's garage, laying on it's side with furniture piled on top of it. No shit. She was the original owner and the poor thing only had 700 miles on it. It needed everything...7 year old gas in the tank and carbs, the battery acid had ran out and got all over the back of the bike. The gas tank had a dent in it from a couch that was on ...

The next KZ440.

After I wore out my first 440, I found this one, a 1981. It needed some work, but the engine was in great shape with low miles. New cables, chain/sprockets, battery, tires, new turn signals front & rear, and a jet kit for the carbs. I put 48,000 miles on this one and it never let me down or stranded. With the over-the-seat Pony Express saddlebags, a small National Cycle windscreen, sleeping bag/tent on the back, I would take long trips for 1-2 weeks at a time. My favorite was my annual ride up into Canada every June, from my ...

1980 KZ440LTD

After 2 years on my KZ250, I went with a KZ440. This was a clapped out example with a butchered wiring harness. I repaired everything that was wrong with it and it was completely reliable for the next 3 years and a little over 40,000 miles. People would tell me "you can't 'tour' on that bike, it's too small...". Well, here I am in Westlock, Alberta, 1000 miles from home and I don't see a truck or trailer around.

1981 Kawasaki KZ250LTD

This is the first bike I got in May 1983, after 3 total hip replacement surgeries. I grew up in a family of accomplished motorcyclists, but I was born with an insidious genetic collagen defect. It's auto-immune and destroyed all my joint cartilage...by the time I was 14, my spine and hips were fused. I walked with crutches for 12 years and my leg muscles completely atrophied. In 1980, I started hip replacement surgeries. I have endured 6 total hip replacements between 1980 and 1993. After 3 surgeries and tortuous physical therapy to get my leg muscles working again, I ...
