Coolant Leak

Calling all fellow ER5 owners... it appears that my bike has sprung a leak. There are two holes (one either side of the engine) from which a greenish liquid - hence I assume coolant - is slowly leaking (when the engine is running on idle and bike is on the side-stand I would estimate a drip every 5 seconds or so - only leaks from one side when on side-stand, gravity is a bugger like that) Having owned the bike, trouble-free, for 4+ years this is not something which has previously happened, so any ideas what it is/why it's happening before I take it to a garage and get laughed at "'cos they all do that, sir"

Coolant

Steve don't want to alarm you but it could be the head gasget that's gone. If I'm correct, the holes you mention are down the outside of the two cylinders and act as a soak away for any rainwater etc.. I had this happen on my GPZ600 and had to have the head gasget replaced. Although it might not be too expensive being a naked bike and a twin to boot! Cheers

I wouldn't worry about it

The coolant is seeping through a hole which is there for that purpose, just like the overflow pipe from your bath. Could be just a bit of over expansion. This often happens when people over fill the expansion tank. Heat expands the coolant and because it has nowhere to expand to, because the expansion tank is brimmed, it tries to find it's next nearest point of relief which is those holes. Have a look at this tank which is clear plastic, and make sure that the cold level is no higher than the max level mark. Then run the engine to it's optimum temperature untill you hear the fan cut in. Then check the expanansion tank level again. You should still have some air at the top even though the level will have increased due to expansion. If it's risen to the point where nearly no air is at the top, there's your problem. We are experiencing very hot weather now which could be contributing to the problem. Which ever way though, I doubt it should be of concern. Especially if it's just a drop every few seconds. It's just your engine blowing off a bit of excess coolant. If your engine was overheating and the coolant was seeping through the cylinder head gasket, then you would have an issue, but it isn't, so you probably don't, but still get a professional opinion. It's better coming from someone who has the bike in front of them.

acrobat...

that's the news I wanted to hear! I wouldn't be worried if it was "normal" but after 4 years of ownership to have it suddenly start (albeit during some abnormally good weather) is a bit of a worry but thanks for the reassurance i will check it out as you suggest cheers
