Sign our petition for access to bus lanes

MCN needs you to sign a petition asking London Mayor Boris Johnson to keep his promise to let us as bikers use bus lanes. So far over 3100 bikers have signed the petition, but we still need more! A cycling group has already handed the Mayor a petition with over 3,500 names asking him to reverse his decision to let us share the...

More nonsense from Farrell

How much longer is MCN going to allow Steve Farrell to discredit bikers by peddling this nonsense?

There is no evidence that the bus lanes trials reduced accidents – except on planet Farrell.

On planet Farrell you're allowed to rummage through the results of an investigation and pick out any number you think will make your case look good.

In the real world professional statisticians want to know about a load of stuff that makes it dangerous to rely on juicy looking data -- things like sample size, for instance: if you only have a little data, apparently big changes can in fact be meaningless.

Read the TfL report and you’ll see the phrase “not statistically significant” crop up over and over again.

That doesn’t mean that an apparent effect is “small” – it means that the data is isn’t good enough to draw any conclusions from it (you can have large effects that are statistically insignificant).

Note, by the way, that being statistically insignificant doesn’t mean that there’s no effect: once again, it just means that the data doesn’t tell you anything either way.

Bus lanes

Come on Boris, don't go back on your words and put the bill through like you promised! (or was it political tactics to get more votes???) Talking of bikes in bus lanes, there are a few areas in the uk allowing it with Bristol being one of them. Spread it out to the rest of the country. If it saves lives and reduces the amount of casualties, then it can only be a good thing. Think of the money that would be saved on ever increasing NHS treatment costs as well as the police costs for attending and investigating accidents. I really cant see what the problem is other than all the jumped up polititions getting p!$*&d off at being stuck in traffic and seeing all the bikes cutting through the traffic and doing their best to make it harder for us. Again, Come on Boris, don't go back on your words and put the bill through like you promised! (or was it political tactics to get more votes???) GaryP-SV

My story makes no claim of there being "evidence that the bus lane trials reduced accidents". I have steered clear of stating opinion and stuck to fact. It is a fact that a leaked report on the trial stated accidents fell 42%. I'm sorry you seem to feel I should not have reported this fact. Steve Farrell

My support

Kevin Keohane hereby requests Boris Johnson to make good on his campaign promise allowing motorcycles to use bus lanes to improve safety and reduce congestion. Don't let a vocal minority of well-organised pedal cyclists with an axe to grind overrule good sense.

Wrote to my Council too

I wrote this to my Councillors... Dear SIr, I am a resident of Telegraph Hill and a responsible motorcylist and pedal cyclist. I understand that Lewisham Council are opposing the London Mayor's campaign pledge to allow motorcylces to use London bus lanes. While the topic is an emotive one, particularly for the highly vocal cycle minority, the fact is that stated accidents fell 42% on routes where motorcycles in bus lanes has been trialled. This means that congestion will be reduced and injuries reduced by supporting this initiative. The cyclist lobby seems to think this will discourage people from cycling. There is no evidence to support this. Allowing motorcycles to use bus lanes is simply sensible since it will mean fewer injuries, less congestion and a happier driving experience for everyone -- motorcycles will have more space and will not need to annoy motorists with filtering; motorcycles and cyclists can continue to share the roads as responsible users. Please consider my view in your thinking. Kind regards, Kevin Keohane Nicola Keohane
