Why are bike specific GPS units so damned expensive? I can now go out and buy a 3.5" touchscreen sat-nav for £50. It certainly can't cost £400 to waterproof it! I've been using a cheapie for a couple of years now with a modified car mount. Cling-film stretched over the front and elastic banded at the back has worked very well so far. TMC was less that a quarter of the price of the Garmin too. A ready made waterproof unit would be slightly less hassle, but considering I can buy 9 cheapies for the price of 1 Garmin it's no contest as far as I'm concerned. I have little worry if it gets nicked or dropped or left behind somewhere either.

Expensive!

I bought a car sat-nav off ebay, a waterproof see-through pouch and a bluetooth sender/reciever from amazon (plugs into headphone socket on satnav). Total £125 does a waterproof housing really add 300 quid to the price?

Zumo

SO what's new? It sounds (and looks) like a re-badged Garmin Zumo 550 or 500!

ripping us off!!

Looked at the Garmin Zumo & the Tom Tom Rider but found them to be way to expensive for what they are.

I bought a cheap PDA with GPS installed from Ebay for less than £50. It sits in the map pocket of a tank bag with a £3.99 earpiece plugged in & it works.

If it gats dropped or nicked I haven't lost much & has the added advantage of the PDA facility.

The BMW Tax

Typical BMW; stick a badge on it and charge an extra 100 quid or more...

Do I look Stupid? Do I?

What do they think they are doing? The components in this kit are readily available for less than £70.00. Yes there is a lot of R&D in making one of these but if they ever want to recover those costs they would need to price it lower than the new Tom Tom. A second hand and well proven tom tom rider is only £150.00ish. Get on your bike..Garmin.

Buy the standard on

The standard Zumo 550 is exactly the same. I've had one for a year after doing it on the cheap with a PDA running TOMTom in a plastic bag. Infintely better solution, the screen dialog is design for use with gloves on. The MP3 features are great, I've just returned from a journey to Greece and loaded a number of audio books onto mine to listen. Just buy the standard one, it comes with two cradles one for the car and one for the bike. Brilliant product
