Many people have to get cancer or lose a loved one to realise that life is there to be lived, and that being scared of death and so on just stops you enjoying life to the full. Society has become highly risk-averse. Some groups of people have learned to balance risk and reward and take a bolder view. Nice essay.

We are indeed fortunate to have the stars allign in such a manor that enables us to enjoy such a sport/lifestyle. In anything one does, fear is present, but does not have to be a factor in one's decision making process.

Remember, Yoda said "Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering."
