Yamaha YZF-R1 (2009-2011)

This is like no in-line-four cylinder sportsbike ever produced. It’s simply sensational.  The Yamaha R1’s ultra-short-stroke engine has a cross-plane crankshaft, with its crank pins set at 90° and has irregular firing intervals, which is technology lifted directly from Valentino Rossi’s factory YZR-M1. At a standstill the motor spins up like a two-stroke and on the move the R1’s ability...

2009 Yamaha R1

These Honda CBR 1000 RR fans are trying to down the new R1 saying "bug eyed this, bug eyed that", but atleast its headlight are projection.  You can't even find a new car without some sort of projection these days.  The CBR is living in the 1990 with is headlights.  Plus the Honda had that smuch in face! Talk about a face on a grandmother could love.  The mother would've put it up for adoption!  Change to a aftermarket exhaust and the Honda just looks plain old retarded.  The blade is ugly with is identity crisis, little bit of R1 on the gas tank, a little bit of ducati on the turn signals, a little bit of buell/R6 with the exhaust, a little bit of R1 in the Ram intake, a little bit of all these bike to creat a that looks like a malfunction!  Face it Honda fans, Honda has let you down again!  Continue to live in the shadows of the Mighty R1!

R1

I must agree with you smibru. The blade looks like the bulldog of the bunch with its disproportionate bodywork and squashed nose! And those headlights are straight from 1986. I've always appreciated and respected fireblades but the latest one looks like its been chasing parked cars!

The R1 may not be the best incarnation yet but it still has that instantly striking and aggressive R1 look. You know instantly as soon as you see any of the R1’s dating right back to the original that they're all part of the same family.. The blades, ZX10's and even the gixers have all changed so much over the years its ridiculous. They could all learn something from Yamaha in the design department. It has been and always will be the best looking jap litre bike.

is this the same r1 that has hardly changed since the original.are yamaha so scared to change that they wheel the same looking bike out every year.whats with the underseat exhausts....very last year but then they have to copy ducati to try and give it some class, even though it does,nt work.the only brave thing they have done is bring out a bike with a pink frame...very nice.truth is yamaha are scared of change and will always be playing catch up to the blade

r1 v blade

What's with all the bitching by cbr riders. You are supposed to be commenting on the r1 or the review!!!

I can see where darb1 is coming from with the "bug-eye" comment but i dont mind them (although i do prefer the lamps on my 2000 R1). My mate has a 900blade and i would say both mine and his are awesome machines. I prefer my R1 but that's just my personal taste. The new R1 looks tight and i'l be at my dealership at 8pm on the 27th with my fingers crossed!!!!

As for stupid comments about yamaha being scared of change.....DID YOU EVEN READ THE ABOVE REVIEW??!!!!!! Crossplane crankshaft? Lower petrol tank for improved centre of gravity? new rider position to improve weight distribution (and possibly help keep the front end down a bit more under acceleration)??!!!

I would mention the old saying "if it aint broke, dont fix it!" but after proving that the R1 is definately not broke by winning the motoGP (with a little help from some italian bloke, lol) they still looked into changing any possible detail they could in order to IMPROVE it. Details so small that ignorant readers dont even notice them and post comments like "is this the same r1 that has hardly changed".

As for looks....if you completely redesign the plastics and shape then it's no longer the beast that R1 fans know and love. stylings change, gixers went from curvy to pointy while blades have done this to a lesser extent . yamaha has tweaked it's familiar R1 to the new shape but still kept it's distinctive curves that R1 fans know and love.

As mentioned before, I have an R1 and my mate has a blade. i like em both and would be happy with either, but for me the r1 is always just a cut above!!!

Cool Bike

I would definately love to have one of these R1's in a year or two's time.

I hope MCN get a long term one like they did with the blade, eg. on oil consumption and unexpected extra cost's like the blades brake caliper bolts.

Just read the article in this weeks issue which suggested 25mpg!.....however "thrashed" was a heavily used word. Awsome, rev's like my 125.

1000cc Power Rangers

this is a bit sad,, like kids in a school playground, unfortunatly most of you sheep are  power rangers with more power than you can handle on the roads, but just enough for your ego's

all modern 1000's are super fast !!!!!

most of you would go quicker on smaller bikes if your ego allowed, oh but that might mean riding harder, lol

look forward to passing  most of you on Uk track days on me 600 track bike

appologies to the minority of you who can actually ride these super fast machines

r1 vs blade

owning bikes is not all about speed for a lot of people, ownership and pride in their bike is just as important so for most who will never ride their bike to its full potential its about looks and if we all had the same tastes life would be very boring

R1 Vs Blade

I am not a huge fan of the rear end on the new R1 I think it looks lardy as hell , I have no doubt it will look much better with after market cans but then it shouldn't have to... I have ridden the new blade and it has a great engine but the looks have put me off . There is nothing about it that is even remotely attractive and I think Darb1 needs to grow up and stop being so obvious . The blade is a great bike but honda ran out of money or ideas when it came to the looks . And what's with the 'underseat pipes are so last year ' get a grip ... if all the manufacturours were the same we wouldn't even be having this infantile argument . The fact is the R1 is pushing the envelope AGAIN!!! AND Darb1 should admit he has sour grapes that yamaha has stolen the limelight again as they did from the blade in 1998 . GO ON yamaha .....
