‘Motorcycle detection system’ on roads by Easter

A new surveillance system designed to track movements of motorcyclists on the roads will be operational by Easter, MCN can reveal. The technology can tell motorcycles apart from other vehicles, measure their speeds and will be able to read number plates under plans. Data such as the routes taken by individual motorcyclists along with time and date will be collected...

Money

I still don't work for Derbys Camera Partniship, but a lot has been said about speed cameras making money and I know this is true, in most cases, but accidents cost a LOT of money. And as I have said before this area has more than its fair share of bike accidents (THIS is why these camears are being put here)Up to £100,000 for every serious bike accident on the road, so if nobody speeds at these new sites the cameras won't dissapear because they will still be saving the area money.

Donnington and Mallory are not far so go there to ride fast.

derby motorcycle spy camera's

I am quite astounded by how some people have been brain washed into the utter drivel about speeding the government has been forcing down everyones throat.

A speed camera detects somebody going over a predescribed speed limit and thats all. Look at the bike accidents that have happened in the peak district and most are attributed to loss of control by the rider rather than going over a posted speed limit (in nearly all these cases the rider was below the posted speed limit - check out the facts yourself rather than rellying on some PR spin from the government). Going faster than a posted speed limit has only ever accounted for around 4% of traffic accidents so 96% don't have anything to do with exceeding a posted limit.

It is true that the derby peaks has a disproportionate number of motorcycle RTA's and this is down to the number of people that come to the area. If bike riders are forced away from these roads then the police would see that as an improvement. The problem is because a car driver has a lot of metal around them they're less likely to be killed in an accident than someone on a bike. RTA statistics make NO accounting for the vulnerability of the persons involved to the severity of injury so can easily be mis-construed to force leglsation against more vulnerable road users.

If these systems need to have sensors fitted to the road then they'll need to be at fixed points so like with speed cameras you can anticipated them and adjust your riding to suit. The only way to prove that this system is pointles is to ignore it and show that it makes no difference whatsoever.

The new system has a very modest budget for it so I suspect it won't be as effective as everyone things it could be

derby

are using accident statistics for the whole country or just derbyshire?

"It is true that the derby peaks has a disproportionate number of motorcycle RTA's"

if its uk stats then you have just blown your own argument.

so whats the answer if-

"Going faster than a posted speed limit has only ever accounted for around 4% of traffic accidents so 96% don't have anything to do with exceeding a posted limit."

Should all motorcyclist HAVE to have further training because it's their fault that their riding skill are not up to standard?

The best thing to do is keep heading for Derbyshire and crashing, that way we will show the cameras are a waste of time and money!

4x4 anyone?

It's amazing what a Land Rover can pull out of the mud. A 10 foot steel pole set in a concrete footing would be nothing to it. Bit of chain from B&Q is all you need. You will have a great laugh doing it and have a great story for the pub. I am stunned that people with capable vehicles don't do a lot more urban reshaping at night.

No offense ImImImJm but you really do sound like a government spokesman. spondonste is right, forcing people not to exceed an arbitrary speed won't prevent accidents. There is quite a lot of evidence that speed trapping actually causes accidents so what are they trying to achieve? One thing and one thing only, remove motorcyclists free spirit. just another step towards a totalitarian state.

Beleive me I hate speed cameras as much as anybody, BUT, as I have said ,I know a bit about the Derbys camera partnership, and I SAY IT AGAIN, they have been given a task. That task is to cut the number of motorcycle fatalaties and casaulties in Derbyshire. Thats it. The task has only been appointed because countless bikers are crashing in Derbyshire. Year in year out the figures increase. They have tried lots of other things. IE a crashed bike at their stand at the NEC, which only got abuse. Hidden cameras, other spped cameras, but whats the point if you slow down for a camera , speed up after it, realise you are going to fast and BANG.  These specs will mean you will have to keep to a set (and hopefully safe) speed limit along a stretch of (dangerous and scene of countless accidents) bity of road. I ride everyday and do 12000 miles a year on my bikes. My spirit feels pretty free.

Detection System ?

In the 1960s the Free (?) World was bemoaning the tyrannical way the soviet bloc screwed down and spied on it's population. By comparison to us today they had it easy. When George Orwell wrote 1984 I'll bet he never imagined that any "democracy" would end up like this, the buggers'll have us all walking in step or be fined next !.

To Arms

I am with RandalDavies.  A chain/ 4x4 and slip of the clutch will soon sort it. Having just got my license back after being lured in by the Bill on a unmarked fireblade fitted with recorder, its about time we hit them where it hurts.

If all else failes, then it will be time to call in the heavy's. Angle grinder man as reported in the news:- http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/3112670.stm

If only more people had teh balls to stand up and be counted. Anyone Fancy a rally............
