Top Tips For New Bikers

I was just thinking after I posted the stupid reply about sticker removal (sorry) that there is a myriad of experience on this forum as well as the 'new to biking' fellows (and fellowesses).

Has anyone got any top tips (real ones this time) in relation to biking, skills maintenance etc that has been passed on or learned over years of experience that newbies could benefit from, things like taking out a coaster to put your sidestand on in hot weather so it doesn't sink through the tarmac.

Just thought as old farts could impart a bit of brain.

Sorry if this is a repost. SK.

P.S. whilst writing this I am wearing my wife's panties.

cattle grids in wet are like ice, drive over them in a straight line.

in winter beware shaded areas, ice or frost may still be living there.

8 out of 10 cars that pull out in front of you will turn off within half a mile and probably not indicate. too busy thinking about getting home.

top boxes can fit 2 helmets in, less clutter in pub.

leaves and cow shite are slippery when wet.

building sites and farmers dont clean up their muck outside their premises/ fileds.

bikes aquaplane at same speed as cars, 50 mph. slow down.

more often than not, a left hand bend follows a right hand bend and vice versa. or we would go in straight lines.

be polite if stopped by police. it can help. sometimes. if you have race cans fitted you will get stopped at some point.

if a speed limit sign is red circled there is more chance of there being a speed camera there. ie 30, 40 , 50. in my experience. and its for a reason.

its okay to pull out into opp lane to have a look to see if overtake is there ( as long as its clear as far as you can see!)

when overtaking, get out early and overtake across the angle in a straight line, safer and more stable rather than screaming up close, singing out and back in.

oh yes, never take off unless there is somwhere to land. you need to be able to get back in rather than forcing car drivers to let you in.

have fun. much more pleasure in a good smooth overtake thats safe.

car drivers cant help it most ov them prob biker at heart n aint allowed one, so take it easy on them n give them a wave wen they move n let ya in it better than kissin tarmac.

my expierience

well i'm waiting on my cheque to buy my bike but i always give filtering bikes more room and watch for bikes in my car. i like bikes and i am a biker who has yet to buy a bike.

very few bikers wave when i give them extra room to filter which i do when driving my car.
i have ridden bikes and borrrowed bikes off friends many times in the past. also a few of my friends in school were farmers and i have riden bikes in fields and around slippery farm lanes for  many years underage.

my tip is be very relaxed on the bike no matter what you do to upset the bike stay chilled look where you want to go and it'll sort itself out. unless you are going stupidly fast or there is something on the road you won't drop it.
this is just what i have expierienced in my time on bikes and advice i have used which i have been told. i'll come back after many miles of my own road bike when i get it. (Honda varadero)

the look where you are going advice has worked for me on often cow sh1t covered gravel lanes. don't think about the sliding bike under you just look at the exit of the corner and don't touch the brakes or trottle. just concentrate on getting o that point where you want to be

Leave a big gap

to the car in front when stopped in a queue of traffic - and keep yer eye on yer mirrors. And, IF YOU SEE A STUPID COW NOT LOOKING WHERE SHE IS GOING, GET OUT OF THE WAY SHARPISH BEFORE SHE RAMS YOU UP THE ARSE!

I shal be following my own advice from now on:wink:
