Poll: 50mph limit on country roads. What do you think?

MCN wants to find out what British bikers think about the issues facing motorcycling today. That's why from now on we'll be running weekly polls to gather your opinions on all aspects of biking. This week's questions is: The Government is proposing a 50mph limit on country roads. What do you think?    The Government is proposing a 50mph limit...

50 limit

it is not the speed that ppl have prob with it is the ppl who drive at very low speed eg 20-30 in a 60 that get ppl going

i have had 2 in to days on the same road
all this does is lead to road rage as ppl try and pass them
these ppl need taking off the road for not driving with due consiredation for other ppl

It's not speed that's the problem but flat cappers in Nissan micras .They NEVER get up to speed and are deadly.Same goes for grannies in Hondas.A test for the over seventies is more sensible, but it won't raise money.

Salinson30 you are dead right and i couldn't agree more.Free country, yeah right, respected political commentator Jon Snow is being 'investigated' because he dared to say George Bush's presidency was a nightmare. What ever happened to free speech? As for a 50 limit that is pure revenue, simple as that.It wasn't so long ago that senior police officers were calling for some speed limits to be raised. The accident figures just don't bear proper scrutiny but these days when does that stop anything, you only have to see the environmental lobby's 'sucess' to see that.Everyone talks about(compulsory) training, and i'm not knocking that but ultimately isn't that just another restriction in our 'free country'?

50 speed limit

I remember once riding an old slingshot Suzuki 750, which had a broken speedometer; riding for two weeks until the replacement cable came through from the dealer with no real idea of my speed. I used the rev counter, common sense and a bit of forward thinking to ride comfortably on all kinds of roads. Which where I live means country roads, country roads and more country roads. When the speedo-cable finally came and I rode the same roads in the same way, comparing the real speeds I'd been riding, I was amazed at how ridiculously slow the roads are in the UK. And that was with a 60 limit. What's bugging me right now is the fact I'm about to move to the States, where the limit's already 50. I've been out on the roads trying to pin myself and my bike back to that kind of 'sensible' speed. It's impossible. The nature of these machines is to be controlled but not held back, and if they have to be held back then I'll do the holding, thankyou. There's a huge difference between travelling a bit faster and riding dangerously. Why doesn't the government ( read, office-bound car-driving idiots) recognise that...?

Slow speed

I can't agree more with Firkit's comments, it's the same with the HGV 40mph speed limit it just gets ppl enraged and then they take risks that they wouldn't normaly. This is so obviously just another cash cow for the government, maybe if they had a decent road infrastructure there woudln't be as many accidents and no need for overtaking into the path of oncoming traffic, maybe they could spend some of their speeding fine cash on improving the road surfaces to reduce accidents or even just send a road sweeper out to remove the gravel from the middle of the road, anyway the list goes on but you all know that they will just do what ever they want as usual because your vote doesn't count. Safe riding STU.
