Pan European ST1100 cutout

Hi all,

I own a Honda Pan European ST1100 (import), 2000 model with only about 23,000km on it. Until about 6 months ago it was fine. Now I have an engine cutout problem.

Usually at just the wrong moment, during a high(er) speed overtake, the engine dies. Not an immediate cut out, but a slow dying away, preceded by a noticable jerkiness in the ride. Turning the throttle has no effect. Ignition lights illuminate. I suspect a fuel flow problem of some sort, but the bike has been in to a local dealer once and had a total clean out of the fuel system. The problem still occurrs. Five times on the way to and from Knockhill on Saturday last. A bit worrying for me and the drivers of the vehicles I was overtaking.

If I sit for five minutes and apply full choke, the bike fires but runs like a bag of spanners for a minute or two until all cylinders come to life. It won't start without allowing that few minutes. I've checked breather pipes which are free and clear.

Any ideas will be gratefully accepted and looked in to.

Cheers folks.

When your engine dies or loses power does it make any unusual noises like, spitting back, coughing, hesitating or even a backfire as though it`s getting short of fuel?

Sounds like fuel.
If you have an inline filter, check and replace.
Check also for debris and water in your fuel tank, ideally drain and remove, visual check for rust and crud, remove the petcock and check the filter, clean any crud or flakes from the tank, seal and refit, if theres evidence of water in the tank, (very common) ditch the fuel and refill completely with fresh and see how that goes.

It very briefly stutters and hesitates before the engine dies. No backfiring or other strange noises.

Thanks for the suggestions M1KS. I've spoken to a few people in the know and similar ideas have come up. First time I've heard about water in the fuel being a common problem on these bikes though. Cheers. I'll give it a go.:hmmm:

HONDA ST 1100(IMPORT)2000

Hi

It's not that the ST 1100 has issue's with water getting in the tank through the fuel cap(like a lot of other bikes)it's the sad fact  that you often these days pick up water and debris from the servo station!!.They sometimes have leaking in there under ground tanks, and if you refuel just as there tanks are getting low then you can get a shit load of crap.So it is something you should check on periodically. If you ever go to a servo(petrol station) and a couple of minutes later your car or bike starts running odd or off there's a good chance you got a bad batch of fuel.A quick fix for this is to put some methylated spirit in with the fuel, about 100ml to two gallon. If the water has been in there for some time then it will need cleaning out,but if it has just started and its not so much then you will get away with it without stripping things down.

You may wounder why metho? Its because water and petrol do not mix.And because petrol(or oil)float on water, then the water ends up at the lowest point in the fuel tank. This then gets sucked or fed to the carbs or injection system, and whats left, starts rotting the arse out of you fuel tank(if its a metal one)Anyway metho will ready mix with water and petrol,so mixes them both together and allows it to pass through the system and get burnt with the rest of the fuel. It's funny coz i only done this myself two weeks ago,i have a Holden Commodore 3.8.-V6. Filled up with gas and it started running like a bag of shit, thought i know what that is so the next day bought some metho, put 500ml in the tank(it takes like 15 gallons) with in two hours of driving about it was running spot on again. But you should also consider the fuel cap breath valve, and the fuel cut out valve(or diaphragm tap). Both of these have been known on earlier models to cause problems,so your bike maybe getting to that age now.

Hope this helps

Good Luck

Thanks for that kcmc. Giving that a try this evening and going for a blast tomorrow - hopefully. Maybe.

Don't care what other bikers think, the ST1100 can be just as much fun as a sports or sports tourer. Had a VFR last, but knees giving out.

Anyway, thanks again.

Vacuum Tap Diaphragm?

Hello, I had an early 90's ST1100. Would cut out now and again without warning. Would restart again after a while. Fuel tap unit changed that housed the diaphram cut off--PROBLEM SOLVED!

The vacuum fuel tap uses a small rubber diaphragm in the same way as a CV carb. If that gets a pinhole leak in it, then the tap only opens a third or halfway so it can’t supply enough fuel when you grab a handful of throttle
