UK gets first bike friendly crash barriers

The UK’s first bike friendly crash barrier has been installed in County Durham. Made in Spain the Biker-Safe barrier has been designed to absorb the energy of a crashing bike and prevent riders hitting support pillars, which is one of the main causes of serious injuries or death. A spokesman for Durham Police, the country’s most bike friendly force said:...

As someone who regularly rides in County Durham it's reasuring to know the Police and Council are putting their efforts into protecting the people who use their roads rather than trying to drive them out as in other parts of the country.

Not quite the first

I received a letter back in June 2006 letting me know the Southern area Higways Agency had installed "BikeGuard" railings on parts of the M27 and M4 to improve rider safety on bends. This had happened in March 2006.

Great idea. Even better that there is a government willing to do it! Here in the US some areas still install the wire style of barrier that don't stop cars or trucks and are like a cheese cutter to motocyclists! The rest are just standard armco like one used to see at race tracks until the advent of soft walls. No hope for this over here, they would want to cost justify it and beat it to death before even thinking about it.

Brilliant Idea!

I think that this barrier is a brilliant idea, not only does it show that County Durham Police and Council are trying to be more bike friendly but it also shows that they are trying to encourage safer riding through raising awareness of how bad a bend or corner is as they will most probably be put at hotspots first.

Kudos to them, hopefully Lincolnshire Police and Council will follow in the footsteps of these guys and begin to respect bikers!

Yes

we are lucky here in Durham to have a constab that is pro bike for a change. If only a lot more had the same attitude. Long may it last..

Crash Barriers

Great idea just needed someone to get it done, this is what comes of useing professional motorcyclists [ people who know what they are talking about] to help with ideas, hope other local authorities will think twice about cheesewire and look at this instead.

Its about time to.     many millions of pounds has been spent helping make provision for cyclist but very liitle on  the safety of motorcyclists[another minority group] so let this be a first and hope that many more local authorities take heed of Durham and of the needs of other two wheeled users.
