BMW R1200GS Adventure (2006-current)

This is the last word in round-the-world motorcycling can do. With a monstrous 33-litre tank, grunty motor, shaft-drive and excellent reliability in all climes and conditions the BMW R1200GS Adventure redefines the giant trailie motorcycle class. And the BMW R1200GS Adventure is a giant – at nearly a quarter of a ton fully-loaded and with a lofty 910mm seat only the brave or foolish will...

reliability very poor

BMW should produce a world beating bike, they have in this 1200gs a bike just above the Ducati for reliabilty.  just ask a BMW dealer if you have one within 50miles.

More BMW breakdown in Europe than any Jap bike.  Latest probs on this model  are electrics and rear seal on axle.  Ask a driver of one of the pick up companies who bring the things back home.

Corrosion

Corrosion can be a issue.

BMW are digging their heels in on this, because its hurting them financially, in my opinion. I've been pointed at the BMW Approved small print. Corrosion is not covered if the bike is greater than 2 years old. I was told I hadn't been washing it with the right products. I responded that I had used the same cleaner as I had on my previous bike, an Aprilia Tuono. There was no response to my question as to why this could be, or indeed why only some parts of the engine casing had paint bubbling up (front cover & gearbox) and others which had een cleaned with the same stuff were fine. I felt sorry for the BMW representative, as he clearly didn't belive the spiel he had been coached to give to customers. This is a top priced bike and I expected much much better. Virtually no underseat storage - guess you have to buy the luggage pack. You even have to buy a toolkit supplement to get a tool for rear wheel removal. The good bits: Good comfy ride and really a good design let down by poor build quality.

I've got a KTM now, and a smile on my face :smile
