Valencia MotoGP: James Toseland just edges out Ben Spies

James Toseland started his final race for the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 squad by clocking the 13th best time in opening practice at Valencia. And much to the relief of the 28-year-old, his best lap of 1.34.865 just edged out new World Superbike Ben Spies. Toseland beat the Texan, making his Yamaha YZR-M1 debut, by just 0.187s in an opening practice session...

Top Speed Difference

Have you seen the top speed difference between between the Yamaha's

JT's is the slowest at 300.50 km/h CE is 302.267km/h

BS is the same as JL at 306.556 km/h which is to be expected, he is on one Rossi's bike's according to Euro Sport's Toby Moody this afteroon. Rossi's is the quickest at 307.079 km/h.

Thought I could see Fiat coming through the paint work and he is riding under theYamaha Factory Racing banner too.

No favouritism there then is there!!!!!

The top speed on the straight is not all to do with engine power, it could all come down to how well you are getting on the power out of the corner! But yeah Toseland should be well pleased with his performance today, after all he has had 2 years on the bike and Spies an hour and only 0.187 seconds in front!! Thats why he is out on his ear!!

Many reasons for that...

There are many reasons why top speed can be different on exactly the same bikes - drafting, wind speed / direction and rider nerves are some of them.

According to Yahama's racing manager Lin Jarvis..."The bikes will be virtually identical to the Monster Tech 3 Yamaha satellite machines ridden by Colin Edwards and James Toseland, and therefore the same as the machines he will be riding next season."

Are you searching for excuses even before Spies does better than Toseland ( IF that is what happens )?

top speeds

a major factor is the size of the rider which is why Pedrosa nearly always records the highest top speed - even going a few years back when the Honda was a dog. They really should fit and airbrake to his bike - cant deny that gaining 10mph due to being 4, 7" tall and weighing 5 stone isnt an unfair advantage! an even bigger advantage in 125 and 250...

think Spies put in a good performance - he had a few problems and still came within a couple of tenths of Toser who has had 2 years on the bike!

Trying to rile people up!

Shame on you guys MCN. Stories like this trying to get the Toseland VS Spies battles going on here again. Spies will do just fine. Give the guy a few laps in anger during a race and let the chips fall. Just quit trying to turn it into a Soap opera!

... reserve judgement until Spies pulls off a debut 2nd grid qualifier... I know Tosey ain't performing right anymore but people forget his early debut performances until his set of big offs damping his mojo. He didn't get enough support or decent parts/machinery being in a satellite team let alone being one of Edward's nemesis and the now totally obvious manipulation to get Spies into Tech 3.

I don't think the top speeds actually have any "fairness" arguments to them... The fact is, Spies will have a new engine, while Edwards and Tosey are on pre-run dogs...

I don't want to be the Devils advocate again

BUT,whichever side of the fence you sit ,you can think of all the why's and wherefores, but whether you wave a JT flag or a BS one ,you know what the outcome is going to be,those that can, "do"  it really is that simple if a chance comes grab it with both hands, but don't die wondering what if ?......Whats so bad if Ben Spies is the next challenger to the famous five...Isn't it better for the sport.....everone is belly aching about moto gp being boring yet it seems we don't want a new kid on the block?,and the truth is it's just so it doesn't make JT blush?,is that really not a bit silly?  love him or loathe him, Yamaha are guilty of giving James a great chance they didn't employ him to want him to do badly !! If Spies fails the same rules will apply...lets hope not to far down the line.....Yamaha are giving Crutchlow or Bradley Smith or one of a number of brits the same opportunity...until that time good luck Ben far so good!

At the end of the day it would be good to see JT do well but lets face it he would be a fool to push to the point of finishing the season with a bad injury look what happened at the start of the season.

Shame No1 is that MCN seem to keep manufacturing this `rivalry' and shame no2 is that the mere mention of James Toseland brings out all the haters of the chap spitting their envious bile.  I say envious because why else would they be so friggin vicious all the time.  You know who you are.  I don't suppose JT cares about BS, CE or any of them as much as MCN et al would like us to believe.  He'll give it his all, it probably won't be as good as the majority of the riders but hey ho, he's got a great ride next year in (my opinion) the best competition with a whole bunch of Brit riders and a paddock full of less bitchy pussies that won't mind the odd fairing clashes.
