It depends what you're comfortable riding on. but i personally commute on sports bikes all year round without any problems. I use a nearly new Honda CBR600RR & 10 year old ZX9-R & they're both fantastic bikes. I don't think the year of reg really matters too much as long as you look to buy what you can afford and look for a bike that's been well looked after. It might be worth considering a CBR600F, they're a fantastic road bike, though not quite as 'sporty'. It just depends what YOU want.

handling, braking  and performance advantages, and perfecty comfortable generally, fairings guide warm air up on some which is novel this time of year.
