MotoGP goes 1000cc from 2012

FIM President Vito Ippolito and Dorna Sports CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta confirm today that MotoGP will run to a new 1000cc engine capacity for the 2012 season. Following talks between MotoGP’s governing body the FIM, series rights holder Dorna Sports and the MSMA in Geneva, the Commission agreed to change the maximum engine capacity of the MotoGP class to 1000cc for the...

Mistake

Wow I made one mistake and I'm a moron? Well all I have to say in my defence is that I've been working very long hours for a couple of weeks and had minimal sleep. I know I should have thought more about my sideways remark but we all get it wrong sometimes. Aquarius if you re-read what I said about the costs you will see that we were saying similar things - I was questioning the reasoning behind dumping the 800s when there has been so much money spent on them as well as several years of racing. We know that it takes a vast amount of money to run a motogp team but I think there is a massive knee jerk reaction here from the powers that be. The fact is that just as WSB is production bike derived racing, motogp is prototype bike racing. These are the two factors which above all else define the series and if we take the prototype element away from motogp then we are left with two production bike series. Though after reading Preziozi's comments in mcn it looks like the new format could work as the top teams will likely remain entirely prototype, while smaller teams will be hybrids to start with. We've seen the rumpus that the change from 2 to 4 strokes created and that worked out so I hope that the same happens in 2012.

Mightier than the pen?

The pen truly is mightier than the sword, but it seems the Oxford English dictionary is mightier still. I assume that we are all fans of motorcycle racing - otherwise why would we be here? So with that in mind why the argument about spelling? Surely there are more important issues at hand. Issues such as when motogp goes to 1000cc engines will Dani Pedrosa be able to hold on? Or will he be like an Ewok on a speeder bike?

Development

Whatever the final specifications for the bikes, we'll see more development from 2012.  The poppet valve and it's power sapping springs and cams may dissapear in favour of rotary valves or electronicaly controlled ( with easily adjustable timing ) window valves triggered by crank or piston position / speed.  Two wheel hydraulic drive with overall gearing adjusted by the rider?  Fuel restricions will give increased mileage.  Racing has and always will improve the breed.  The next generation of road bikes & riders have plenty to look forward to.

£100 for Rossi's old 800??

Glad to see full bore 1000's again, but what a waste of money the 800's were..? Should have stayed with 990's eh Honda? Lets hope they can get a decent sized grid by 2012......

Electronics

On the face of it a good call however what's been said about the electronics? This is arguably the greatest single cost from the kit itself, the ongoing development and then the "guru's" ho do all the analysis. I don't know how feasible a standard sealed unit would be however the least they could do is get rid of gyro's and GPS.

MotoGP 1000cc

For the last couple of seasons MotoGP has bored the backside off me... whereas WSB has been superb.

No matter what rule changes are made to MotoGP I believe WSB will always be more exciting and innovative.. I have no intention of watching MotoGP....
