Driver fined £100 after motorcyclist left paralysed

This has to be one of the most disgusting stories I have ever read. UK laws are a joke. When will stupid megistrates wake up and hand out proper sentences. A driver from Leicester involved in a crash which left a motorcyclist paralysed from the chest down has been fined £100. Kate McCullock was pulling into Launceston Road, Wigston Magna, when her...

Presumably you are suggesting that she should have received a custodial sentence? It is clearly a tragic event, but she's only guilty of driving without due care and attention, irrespective of the outcome, that is all her offence was, and the magistrates can only follow the sentencing guidelines that they are given, which it appears they have done in this instance. You could, of course, argue that the police should have charged her with the more serious offences of careless or dangerous driving, but a momentary lapse of concentration probably doesn't merit such charges. I am afraid you are confusing the seriousness of the outcome of the offence with the seriousness of the crime, and the two simply aren't the same.

Justice

How about the driver being retested, rather than just getting her licence back after a year! Or do you think she will be a better driver after a years rest?

Punishment: You said "but she's only guilty of driving without due care and attention, irrespective of the outcome, t?hat is all her offence was," Are you thick or something? Don't you think that that should carry a serious penalty. In this case the guy has been seriously injured and the stupid bint should be punished accordingly. Had a similar thing happen to me. Woman (isn't it always) pulled out in front of me and I flipped over her car. Luckily just hurt my foot which still hurts in the winter. Women should be banned from driving with kids in the car I think!

No Gripemaster, I am not "thick or something", I simply know how the principles of law operate, unlike, it seems, you. In the UK you are sentenced for this type of offence on the basis of the offence, not the outcome. So if two or more people had been hurt it makes no difference to the offence or the sentence.

fine

She was fined £100 for paralysing a rider. The maximum fine is £2500. So I think the fine imposed is disgusting and a joke.

No, she was fined for driving without due care and attention. That's the bit that all of you aren't quite getting. If it bothers you petition your MP and try and change the law.

Nephilius. The maximum fine for this offence is £2500 and a ban. The degree of the sentence(within the sentencing limits) will be based on the severity of the case. Bad driving outcomes etc. This idiot paralysed a rider  and she got a ban BUT a fine that is ONLY a 25th of what she should/could have been fined. Please don't tell me you think the fine was about right. In this case she should have been banned and given the full £2500 fine for driving without due care and attention and paralysing a man in the process. If she had killed him she would have been facing death by dangerous driving and a prison sentence.

WTF

What the fuck - we should all bear in mind if you want to kill/maim someone just do it in your car and plead guilty to not giving a fuck when driving!

If this was vica versa i.e. a bike mangled a car driver/pedestrian it would be everywhere, news etc and made a example of.

I hope Anthony is out of hospital soon, if it were me i would accidentally run the blind slag over

Hi-vis

Here's why High Visibility clothing is going to make no difference to motorcycle safety.

A £100 fine and a year's ban isn't as high visibility as a one million euro fine for speeding in Switzerland.

If a car driver knows he/she will get a prison sentence for bad driving, they look. Believe me - they look real hard.
