Phillip Island WSB: Checa takes the win on the last lap

Althea Ducati rider Carlos Checa won the second World Superbike race at Phillip Island after a last-lap pass on race 1 winner Leon Haslam. Alstare Suzuki rider Haslam finished just 0.3 secs behind Checa in the second close finish of the day.  Third place went to Ducati Xerox rider Michel Fabrizio and fourth was claimed by Alstare Suzuki rider Sylvain Guintoli. Great ride from Checa that will put off his detractors who had written him off (again)I know it is only the first race but could it be that Haga is forever destined to be the bridesmaid and never the bride?

Merv..

Do you not think that the R1s performance has less to do with Spies tallent and more to do with the fact all the teams have had a full testing session at the circuit prior to the meeting and free practice to perfect set up whilst the yamahas have had to revert back to some of last years parts to combat a severe chatter problem .... hence not having the same amount time on that spec of bike.... or as much quality set up time as the other teams have . Just a thought...

WSB Predictable?

Not this season. Well done to the Suzuki boys. Great to see Guintoli in the thick of the mix. It is very clear that in descending order Yamaha, Aprilia and Honda still have some work to do to get their machines sorted. Which to my mind after four days of testing over the last 10 days is a little perplexing, if not worrying for them all. That Beemer is still a bit of a wild beast too. Jeez Checa was good on the Anchors into Honda & MG - fair play to the old dog. But most importantly MCN I need to know how Chris Vermeulen is after his horrific race two off at 230kmph. I don't think his bike collected him into the tyre wall but please report that he is O.K.

wolfitt and other JT slaggers

W ollfit , I tell you what was wrong with JT in Valencia last season , Tech3 was in no way interested anymore in JT and would for sure make sure that the new golden boy Spies be in the limelight . I was there in pitlane on the Thursday whenall the teams open the garages and build up the bikes ready for raceweekend ....... the only bike that wasnt finished by 4PM of the whole pitlane including 125 and 250s was JTs . The mecs were to busy to assist the newcommers in next doorsbox e.a |Spies and were playing about playing basketball with paperballs in the garage . JT was just frustrated because all he wanted was to go out with a reasonable chance to put up a fight .  And for Spies great rider but we will have to see what the future brings ....... dont forget that JT qualified 2nd on the grid in Qatar 2008 in his first race ever in MotoGP ( finished 6th ) and so far that beats Spies handsdown in pure results as he had already 4 full race weekends in GPs with a best finish of 7th . Anyway only a few facts to put all in perspective .

Very good race weekend to all the boys and hope that Xaus and Vermeulen are up and running by now .

Bring on Portimao only 27 days to go lol .

wolfit!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do your turbo's run on bulls**t because your full of it my friend - JT has2 WSBK Crowns too his name and you dont achieve that being a crap overhyped rider. He was hung out to dry in his 2nd season of Motogp and anyone would suffer like he did. He rode today with a beat up left hand and was pretty good as anyone with an ounce of actual knowledge can see the Yam is not up too it yet!!!!!!

Go and fit turbos and like my friend says go and join a bitchy football forum.

Come on the Brit riders - lets show the world what we have!!!!! ( and as the great Jamie Whitham says the includes Guintoli the honoury Brit  :))

Hard Cheese!

Kind of hard cheese for the pups to swallow, but listen up guys - WSBK riders mature like fine wine, so the older they become, the faster their zimmers go. Two races, four old guys in the Top Ten - Checa, Haga, Biaggi, Corser.

From the Horses Mouth

Direct from the Factory Yamaha web site, this may now shut a lot of you up!

James Toseland, Yamaha Sterilgarda World Superbike Team (DNF, 10th)
“I really needed to finish the second race after the crash in the first. To only finish 14 seconds from the front with the issues we’ve had this weekend is not so bad. I was really disappointed with the first race, with my injury on Friday I wanted to have two good finishes today. Full credit to the team they’ve tried so hard but unfortunately we haven’t had the software here to solve the issue. We know what the problem is and I’ve given enough feedback and input to give the guys a direction to go in. We’ve got a lot of work to do, no doubt, but even with all the problems we’re not actually that far away. The package, the power, the balance and the suspension have come on leaps and bounds. On to Portimao now, it’s a long season so we can do it.”

Massimo Meregalli, Yamaha Sterilgarda World Superbike Team Manager
“It was definitely a really tough weekend for us. We solved some problems, and some we still have to work on. As we spent the two day test and the first day of the race weekend resolving the chatter issue, qualifying and race day was our first opportunity to really test the 2010 bike set up. We’ve seen that we have the potential to do well so we will go home and start working on the solutions to be ready to fight for the Portimao races. The team have worked really hard over the last few days to try and solve the issues and both Cal and James have given 100% to meet the challenges.”

Zimmer Walkover

ninjachris79 - Possibly the inexperienced wee upstarts will thrive and flourish around the wide open spaces of Portimão, all of that wide track and more for their silly mistakes, there on in, the zimmers will probably walk it.
