Labour MP: Tell loved-ones not to ride motorbikes

A Labour MP has urged people to tell their male loved-ones not to ride motorcycles.Huddersfield MP Barry Sheerman called motorcyclists “widow makers and orphan makers” who were “disgraceful in a civilised society”.   He said: “If you have a husband, boyfriend or son who wants to get a motorbike, please try and persuade them to get something with four wheels instead.” Join...

Statistics Misrepresentation

Clearly the official statistics are saying much different things to what he is! Can we force a correction? (Where has the figure of 650 come from? Its a gross exageration particularly as its my understanding that accidents are coming down year on year..)

I also have a strong objection to the use of inflamatory language “widow makers and orphan makers” is not a term that should be used in this context. It suggests that the Motorcyclists are killing others where as the truth is that they are being killed...

Note the effort not to drop too his level. However its worth remembering that many Motorcyclists are involved in accidents as a result of inattention of others (Sorry mate I didn't see you). Its not just car drivers although with Mobile Phone, Cigarettes, Stereos etc its not surpising they don't have time to look but also cyclists and pedestrians who frequently don't look or just jump infront of you anyway.

And this year the roads are so bad they are causing many more problems for bikers. I can't tell you how many bits of my commute I have to ride around the dangerous holes which would bring me off (Not potholes - more swimming pools or tank traps)

Everyone below is pretty much right.

If this figure is correct, 106,000 people die in the UK of smoking each year.

15,000 die of drink abuse.

There are around 100,000 reported accidents of cars hitting people, cyclists, motorcyclists etc per year!!

In an ideal World we should be encouraging everyone on to commuter bikes/bicycles and those commuter bikes should be protected from car drivers and commercials.  As should cyclists.  Oil is running out, the World is polluted and congestion reigns.

A road only used by motorcyclists or cyclists would last forever, cars and commercials break them up.

Nothing is done about dangerous car drivers, yet a car is much more dangerous that even a hand pistol or a shortgun firearm etc.  How many car drivers have told us bikers that cars are quicker round corners, and how many times do we see cars coming towards us the opposite way, or in front or behind driving way beyond their driving capabilities and the cars grip levels trying to prove it, when we were just chugging through the countryside trying not to frighten the girlfriend or riding slowly enough so she doesnt get cold and refuse to come out again?

All car drivers seem to assume that all bikes except Harleys are flying/racing, when will they get it in to their thick skulls that ALL cars on public roads are very slow, the only way they can be quicker is to put pedestrians and other road users in danger, they HAVE to start driving kerb to white line and over just to hit a steady pace on roads with bends.  A bike doesnt have to do this, and a standard very basic bike, ie £6,500 is much more capable than a typical family car of £9,000- £11,000.  There arent many roll caged light bodied Porsches or rear areofoiled Caterhams running the roads, especially with tweaked suspension and soft compound tyres as on the car programmes bike vs car track tests, inevitebly driven round the track used for cars, ie bike chicanes missing, preferably on a damp or cold track day.

One out of every 100 or so will be complete nuttters in cars or on bikes, but  there are a much higher percentage of car drivers seriously believe they are quicker in their family saloon when it comes to bends within the speed limits, it is frightening watching them from behind, never mind when they are coming the opposite way or following us in to a bend, all the Police have to do is stick a video camera in the verge and they would catch them.

I wouldnt mind seeing a break down of the stats of how many are bike riders nowhere near a car, involved in car collisions, hit by a car, car pulled out in front etc.

We fully accept bikers are more vulnerable, but no road designs at all are there to get bikers out of the way of cars in danger spots, yet commuter bikes would be a good answer to a lot of the traffic problems, especially when electric ones come of age.

Inaccurate figures, spouting a Nanny State agenda....yep, typical Labour MP.

This is picking up some mileage on Twitter, and Mr Sheerman is not making himself popular.

What a complete twat.

How can this guy say that bikes don't belong in a 'civilised society'? I guess he thinks the civilised thing to do would be to scam and cheat this country for tax payer's money, far more cultured don't you think old bean? If you're concerned about biker deaths, why not campaign for pot holes to be fixed, or for more education for drivers?

My message to this idiot would be what my mother tells me: "Yes, I worry about you riding bikes, but I know how much you love it so I would never stop you"

road death statistics...

It's easy to get road death statistics from the government websites. One of the shocking things is the number of young people dying in car accidents: to quote the report for accident statistics in 2008 "Fatalities in reported accidents involving young car drivers accounted for 25 per cent of all road deaths in 2008." Most of these are caused by young lads, and the trouble is when these lads crash they kill someone else as well. What does this or any other MP have to say about this?

What we need

are some proper motorcyclist MP's who are well informed, I suggest we elect some people who can actually see the benefits of biking and the solutions it offers to congestion etc. Wonder if Whitham would be up for it?

This is just another attempt to spread fear and misinformation so that when they finally decide to ban bikes altogether, they will have public support. You're laughing now but the rhetoric is exactly the same as it was for fox hunting, smoking and several other issues. Why do they want to ban motorcycling? Simple, a totalitarian state can only exist if you have removed peoples passion. People with passion are more likely to rise up against the establishment. Motorcyclists are people with passion. What you need is brainwashed robots that do exactly what the state tells them to do. Free country my arse! If you want to use bulls**t statistics, 3600 people a year are killed on the roads each year, 493 are motorcyclists. That means more than 3100 people die in cars. So, statistically, you are 6 times more likely to die in a car than on a bike. Bikes are much safer than cars.

I think MPs were perhaps a little complacent about fiddling their expenses on the porkine scale !

Claiming for mortgage payments when the loans had been paid off for years and months.

Major tax evasion on expenses.

Claiming expenses for porno movies, and booze and luxury foodstuffs.

Claiming thousands of pounds a  day can be earned from private companies and global corporations by looking after those large corporations interests with government polices in a democratic government NOT.

The BAE bribery scandal that the UK refused to take to court, forcing the American courts to seek justice and fair play.

Cash for peerages.

Employing illegal immigrants in senior government offices without checks.

Cash for British citizenship.

Abuse of colleagues in the workplace.

Adultery in the workplace.

I would say  MPs have been pretty *$%*#@$ complacent ! ! ! ! ! !

These MPs think they have the right in their arrogance to sit in judgement of us ??
