Neil Hodgson calls it quits

Neil Hodgson has today announced his retirement from racing. The former World Superbike and British Superbike champion has been forced to quit the sport after aggravating the shoulder injury he sustained last year. Hodgson required extensive surgery to rebuild his left shoulder after last year’s motocross crash and then clouted the shoulder after a huge highside during practice on the Motorpoint...

Sad News

Sorry to hear the news that Neil has been forced to quit due to injury. I have, over the years enjoyed watching him race and having once literally bumped into him on the London tube, he was going to the Ally Pally Show, he came across as a very grounded and personable individual. Good luck for the future.

Thanks Neil

Neil was always a gentleman, possibly under-rated by a few, and a great ambassador for the sport. I enjoyed watching him in BSB, WSB and AMA (not so much in GP! ;-)).

I wish him all the best in whatever future direction he chooses and I am sure that we'll still see him as pundit on the TV.

Thanks for the entertainment and ciao for now.

Shame

A sad day, but a good decision. Have enjoyed watching and supporting Neil for many years. Hope to see him more as a TV pundit.

Real shame.

It is strange but when I was talking to him and wishing him all the best for this season during the Winter there was something in his manner which made me wonder what was wrong, I was thinking the missing electronics package (£150K) and two technicians because it wasnt quite the whole last year's winning bike without these.

Clearly it wasnt the elctronics, he was worried about his shoulder.

I wasnt one of the people who wrote him off as a rider, anyone who has the stats to prove they have done the job and provided the results is ok in my book.  That said he isnt the easiest rider to get on with unless you are in to motorcross in a big way, I have done a bit of Enduro so we were ok!

If he reads this I wish him all of the best for the future and hope that he makes a similar success in whatever else he does, the Isle of Man is a good place to work, I am there regularly and have worked there, so he should be ok.

Best Wishes

Sad news but not unexpected. It sounded a very nasty injuty and, as the shoulder is such a complex joint, not a surprise that it was so fragile. I really hope those people on other posts who were so negative remember that he was a genuine champion, a great rider and also a very decent bloke. I remember talking to him whilst he was enduring some pain in "Charlies Injuries Clinic" in the BSB paddock - seriously down to earth and likeable.

All the best to him in the future, i hope he gets the opportunity to do something alse special in the sport.

On a positve note - great to see Ian lowry get the ride.

what a shame

How unfortunate to have to retire this way however as everone says Neil has given us some great racing over the years and has a career to be proud of.
Funny you should mention meeting him on the tube wildchild69 cos we met him on the tube after the ally pally show the year he was crowned WSB champion and moving to GP and he was such a decent bloke to speak to.Hope all goes well for him in the future.
