BMW gears up for liquid-cooled GS

BMW is in the early stages of making an all-new, super-efficient, Euro4 compliant water-cooled replacement for its iconic Boxer engine. The new engine is being developed because of tough Euro4 emissions which come in to force from 2012, and the current air-cooled engine doesn’t meet the new standards.     Air-cooling is a problem for engineers seeking lower emissions and reduced fuel consumption...

Water Insulation

More engineering nonsense from MCN. Water cooling allows more efficient fuel burning because you can more closely regulate jacket temperatures for optimum combustion. Water does not insulate the jacket enough to allow the engine to warm up quicker. It allows the engine to heat up quicker because it reduces the engine heat sink effect that an air cooled engine needs. In other words an air cooled engine will heat up more slowly than a water cooled one. The water does not start to fully cool the engine until the thermostat opens up. You'd soon be in trouble if the thermostat didn't work compared to an air cooled engine that will of course continue to run. Water jackets do however have the side benefit of sound deadening the engine compared to an air cooled one.

Air Cooling

Jeez, i only like aircooled bikes. Got a nice R1150R and 4 other machines that keep cool in the air just like it. Water cooling is for cars with their engines all covered by a shroud.

Bollocks

My 2004 R1150RSA used to get between 50 and 60 miles to a gallon of real, unadulterated gasoline.  Now that gasoline is dilluted with ten percent alcohol my mileage is in the low 40s.  I would have traded up to an R1200 years ago, but Euro 3 compliance resulted in mileage for the newer engine in the mid-thirties.  I will buy a new bike before 2012 and the "benefits" of Euro 4 horse pucky.

Erm...

BMW have been making watercooled GS's for years... & they put the cylinders beside each other & reduced the capacity to 800 (after they upped the capacity from 650 & added a cylinder)... me thinks the title of this article could have been worded better.

Yeah...

I remember a liquid cooled, horizontally opposed engine in a bike - it was called a "Scott Squirrel". The police on beat used to ride them except that they didn't need bike helmets - the helmets that went with their uniform served.

So, like that, but bigger?

BMW Liquid Cooled GS

Dear Mr. Bikefar, I think you will find that the bike the police used was called a Velocette Grey Ghost and was indeed a liquid cool flat twin and shaft drive. The Scott was an inline twin two-stroke with an illustrious history, and a bike based on that design was briefly resurrected and manufactured by SILK who had a factory in Derby.

As long as BMW make a short leg version I for one will be placing my order as soon as they are available!

More liquid cooling

Hi, Mr. Garythebass,

You could be right, my late father told me that they were Scott Squirrels and he wasn't right about everything. These bikes weren't obviously badged, although there is one of what I thought was a Scott near my home and is ridden frequently.

I think I'll stick to my BMW Rotax GS - it's just abit lighter.

I wonder if the new engine will be sub 100 b.h.p. (if the EU gets it's way)?
