Near-standard S1000RR hits 202mph

A standard BMW S1000RR with an off-the-shelf Akrapovic exhaust, a smaller rear sprocket and some gaffer tape over slots in the screen cracked 202mph from a standing start in one mile. The speed run was part of an experiment by Performance Bikes magazine to discover the new BMW’s ultimate speed potential, and is featured in this month’s issue, out October 6. The...

They are ALL fast

Any current sport bike is very fast. That said, all this started because I said the BMW crack 200 mph in a near stock form and it wont. It may show it on the speedometer, but speedometers read very high. (180 on your speedo is really about 163 at a 10% error rate. The industry standard is 8 to 10%) At the lowest average error of 8 % 202 is about 187 in round numbers which puts the BMW right at the electronic limit. Most big bore sposrt bkies will not actually pull the full 186 mph limit, so yes the BMW is impresive but it still will not do a real 202 mph.

As far as Hayabusas running 200 at dragstrips they are turbo charged and many also use nitrous oxide. If a guy says he hit 200 and you dont see low 7's on the board he didn't. He is just reading his optimistic speedometer.

Near Standard?

Lazer timing, GPS speed logging? Bet there wasn't!  Why is MCN plugging this BMW so unashamedly? I'll bet ayears wages that an "unrestricted" new 'Busa would eat it!

Warning!!

am i the only biker thinking this new BMW is the death knell for superbikes???  ......  when i started biking there was a gentlemans agreement that the manufactors only made bikes up to 125 bhp....  then it was removed!!  ....  but the anti biking mp's, and worse of all the euro mep's have been trying to restrict bikes to 100bhp for some years!!  ............................. and i think this bike might bring the subject back to life again!!!! .........................  : -(

BMW 202

A power commander would remove the speed limiter.

Busa's beat sports bikes at the drag strip because Busa's are long and low, but sports bikes are short and stumpy. Also at RWYB sports bike riders don't know how to launch correctly. Seen it myself many times. I've beaten many sports bikes myself on a fairly standard Bandit 600. Of course, if the sports bike was launched properly, it would have kicked my butt every time.

I too remember the 125bhp limit. Bikes are now limited to 186mph (300kph). The same as cars are limited to 155mph.

Somehow, I think (although I haven't seent the magazine) that they would have used proper timing equipment.

Hayabusa are so pig ugly tho'

The Japanese made a speed cartel for years amongst themselves, and they're now paying the price when a company outside of their little group comes in and upsets their apple cart.

The ZX12 and the Blackbird are good looking bikes,  from the front the 'busa just looks like a fat girls fanny :)

The S1000RR was not designed to rival the hayabusa or the ZZR1400. It was designed to rival the GSXR1000, R1, Ducati 1098, etc. If BMW wanted to rival them they might have made the S1400RR that would probably hit 220 straight of the shelf but they didn't they designed it as a superbike for the 1000cc class. Its a amazing bit of kit.

so what? a fast bike?  it is not standard so i could not give a shit.    also... why stop there with the mods? why not put a rolls royce jet engine in the bike  and pump out even more BOLLOCKS NONSENSE POINTLESS REPORTS.   pb has been in the gutter since 98, mcn is following suite with this (and many, many other guff ) news reports. STOP WRITING THESE GAY POINTLESS PEICES.

Calm down dear...

Look Darren, PB is just a magasine trying to sell copies. Everyone knows that the S1000 handling is great and that's been amply covered, so its pretty reasonable to explore the bike's performance potential. I wont argue that PB is a horrific read, I gave up on it years ago, but the mods they made were pretty normal and weirdly, so is this article. It also seems a tad harsh getting bent out of shape over MCN who merely reported the article. I suggest you drink a little less coffee.

More top quality journalism from MCN. You spend lots of effort trying to get people involved in bikes, you devote a huge amount of column inches to telling us how the bureaucrats are going to legislate for ramdom roadside checks (btw this is lazy reporting, I spent 2 hours reading the consultation paper on this and you have picked the very worst bits out and sensationalised it to get a cheap headline) and other bike threatening legislation. Page 27 this week: "Fight back against official anti bike bias" You know what? Most people who hate bikes do so because they see packs of noisy, reckless morons racing through there streets with little regard for anyone else but themselves. We all have a part to play to ensure that we can enjoy our lifestyle, hobby and passion without fear of persecution or harassment. With a little self control and though for others it would make a huge difference. The biggest difference though would be if brain dead journalists in the biking press stopped bragging to the whole world about the power and speed of bikes. Quote from the top news stories page on the MCN site. "Near - standard S1000RR hits 202 mph" Can anyone tell me how this is in any relevant to 99% of MCN readers? I was out today riding and I saw an old lady struggling to cross the busy main road in a Cotswold village. I pulled over (my noisy) bike and helped her to cross over. Why can't you sensational this of Wednesdays comic instead of the 202 mph headline I am sure will be on the front page somewhere. " Greasy Biker Helps Old Lady Across Road" - Doesn't that give us a better image?
