2011 Triumph Speed Triple first ride: 'beautifully tractable'

MCN’s Chief Road Tester, Trevor Franklin has just had his first ride of Triumph’s new 2011 Speed Triple at it’s world launch at Ascari in Southern Spain, here’s what he has to say: “Triumph states its new Speed Triple was not built as a track bike but to continue the famed road riding of last year’s version – but the fact...

Black aint bad

I looked at it on the UK build your bike site, and if you choose it in black with flyscreen, it doesnt look THAT bad anymore. Still, that just points out how some design elements are just not good, when you need to hide them with black all over. I think they HAD to change the Speed triple after so long or else the press and most customers would have killed them for coming up with the same bike again after so many years. That said, changes don't have to rime with less attractive then previous model. If they can't tweek the design at this stage, I'd just include the flyscreen for free and only offer the black version. The white and red look less then great with plastic bits poping out here and there. And they better hurry up launching the Tiger 800, cause Im now considering the 2011 KTM 990SMT with optional large luggage...

2010 VS 2011 Review please MCN

MCN Please can we have a totally unbiased review of the 2010 vs 2011 Speed when possible please? Its interesting to know for us punters just how much difference there truely is between the old and new model. If as I suspect its actually tiny you'll be saving some of us cash. Is it really more than cosmetic changes???? I'd like back to back performance and power/torque figures tested too please.

Speedie

Triumph are cheating somewhat using a non standard bike @ launch, it should be the standard , over the counter one with the standard, nasty looking cans.

I have a 2004 model ( bought in 2005 new as i don't like the shortie looks of the new one ) and i won't be upgrading to this one either, i've put different shock and fork internals on it, Power commander etc and it is fab.

@TreumpetTriple

Agreed. Especially when you know how much removing the weight under the seat can affect handling. And it's not a cheap option either. I do hope they test the stock versions. Otherwise it's kind of a pointless review since we already know the motor is great, and only a few will go with the lowboy exhausts.

Most of them were standard. Looks like the MCN tester got lucky at the launch with the 3 to 1 Arrows. There's some photos on the Triumph Facebook page here: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=324650&id=330446674987

ruined it

I understand that they had to change the bike otherwise the press would have said their not changing it but this is what happens they change something that didnt need changing and make it hideous or terrible.

Don't get me wrong I can full well believe that the performance on that bike is unbelievable after all it is a triumph triple however my big moan is the headlights. They have taken away the "mascot" for the triple. No other manufacturer could pull off the triples headlights and now triumph have taken them away and changed them for the "digital look" rubbish.

It has really ticked me off cause I wanted to purchase a new triple once I have finished studying and now I will have to get one used because the 2011 triple in my eyes is not a triple because It doesn't have the one thing that makes it what it is

Triumph need to act fast

They need to revert to round lights, get rid of the Dame Edna disasters and chuck out the ridiculous side panels

The new round lights can and maybe should be a new design - with all the designers they have working for them one of them must have some good ideas for new round lights!
