Ben Spies takes best rookie prize

Ben Spies secured the coveted Rookie of the Year crown in yesterday’s Australian MotoGP race. The Texan though admitted he’d not been overly concerned with claiming the honour, his fifth place in Phillip Island also ensuring he will finish top non-factory rider in this year’s premier class series. The Monster Yamaha Tech 3 rider held third until lap eight when he lost...

Good guy

Really Really good guy. I watched him in AMA and i could see then he was very good. Soon as i saw the first round of world supers in phillip island i thought he would win wsb. Then when he won at assen that was just brilliant.

So laid back and dont really say a wrong word even though some stuff he said has been VERY honest lol

I wonder if he has been the best ever non-factory finisher in 800cc era or 990cc?

Ben has a plan and its working.  He will be a title contender in 2011 for sure.  Crutchlow is good but has his work cut out for him. After all, Ben was WSB champ on the same bike in his rookie year.............

Can't wait...

Ben has taken a methodical realistic approach to his rookie year in the premier motorcycle racing series and accomplished most of his goals.

I can't wait to see how he does at the Valencia test and next year. I am sure he will be a contender for the podium at most races and will win a fair share of them.

I love this sport!

Cool Guy

4 mins keft to PI qualifying, and he just said Na... 3rd will do me. He was so cool and calm about it. Finally an American who will be fighting for the championship next year. You got the regular 4, Dovi, Spies, Ellias and dare I say Hayden... Looks good on paper, lets hope they deliver.

Fair play to him this year, I've not always been a big fan for some reason but his no Bullshit, get on with it attitude is propper and I think he is becoming the real deal. Well done Ben, look forward to seeing you on the Factory Yam next year.

Cal & Toseland...

Don't think the comparison of these two can ever be made. JT is old school superbike style; stop turn and wring the neck out of it as it squirms out of the corner, in my opinion, that was his major downfall in GP's and has continued into SBK with the changes to bikes and Electronics.

Cal on a Supersport machine is one of the best things you will ever see on two wheels, unbelievable corner speed, wheels in line style. I recon this could be the big difference between Cal and all the rest, I might be wrong but I've got a feeling he may surprise a few. I just hope he gets the right kit, I'm sure he will cause Monster are chucking everything at it to make it happen. Fingers crossed.

Well done Ben & good luck to Cal, looking forward to Valencia test to see how it all pans out.

Colin Edwards finished 5th in 2009 not 2008 and it was actually because Ben Spies beat Dovi in his wildcard appearance at Valencia that he was able to claim 5th.

ben spies suprised me this year i didnt think he would do as well as he did so fair play for that although non on us actually know what bike he is on. It has been rumoured to be somewhere between colin edwards and the factory bike but we will never know.

The problem he will have next year is for him to win any races (like lots of people think he will) is for that to happen four others have to have an OFF weekend. All being well and everyone being fit he isnt finishing infront of CS JL PD and VR

in my opinion of course, I just dont see all of them having a bad weekend at the same time, as good as ben is he isnt as that level yet

Why can't you accept Ben was on a satellite machine all season with the usual updates a few races after the FIAT boys.

Rumours are just that , rumours, fact however is that his was nearly always the slowest bike on the grid speed wise yet he still ran 3rd to 5th in those races.

Rumors?  Just go to On The Throttle and watch any of the interviews with Spies from this season, including the most recent after Aragon.  Spies makes it quite clear that he and Colin are on the exact same bike. Not only that, but it's the same bike they've been on all year and essentially a moderately updated version of last years bike.  They both received a small electrronic upgrade (software) at Laguna and that was it.

If you watch the interview on the motogp website with Colin after the race you'll see that he himself admits to running a chassis setup that is completely different than the other three Yamahas out there.
