BMW R80/7 midlife crisis - a usable custom

Adam Kay wanted a machine that could be ridden every day and look as cool as any custom - and his R80/7 midlife crisis embodies that perfectly. The donor bike is a BMW R80/7 with a 1978 engine and the frame and forks are from the '81 model. Here's how the project got started, in Adam's own words: "I needed help and I found...

Weather & Salt proof?

If that bike is weather and salt proof I want one like it.

I hate washing my bike. But I love riding my bike ALL year round.

Only managed fourteen thousand miles so far this year.

Meh. Not for me...

I kinda liked it when I saw the first piuc - the rest put me off. Like the "Cafe Racer" look on bikes, but this one does NOT do it for me...

Hummm, not sure...

Wait for the carbs to fall off, unless there's some unseen bracing, as the rubber on the head won't hold them for long without support from the other end. And after the first real puddle the K&N's choke the engine when their full of water they don't pass air very well... Like the mega's though, had some on an R80, nice sound, get rid of the balance cross pipes though as they don't help low down performance, 48" straight throughs will give roll-on wheelies without cross pipes, with them they won't!
