Foreign Licence

Hi all

I have an EU licence that I have been driving with and I am not sure what the law is on converting it to a UK licence.

As I often go back to Greece I would prefer to keep the licence as is rather than change it.

I have read that the licence should be changed after 3 years of living in the UK, but I have also been told on a bikesafe meeting that this is not necessary (by a police rider)

Does anyone have a definitive answer. My insurance co know i am on a Greek licence so I doubt that they can invalidate on the basis I should have changed or anything like that.

Three years

From the horse's mouth - it's three years from taking up residence before you need to exchange it, assuming that it's a licence issued on the basis of a test taken in an EU country and that you're aged under 70. Not sure how long you'd have to spend outside the UK to be considered as changing residence back to Greece, though - you might be able to extend your three years a bit like that, if you're spending a few months in Greece and/or giving up your UK address temporarily.

I'm not sure how rigorously this is enforced - sounds like your police adviser wasn't worried by it, and I'm pretty sure that my wife drove on a UK licence for about ten years resident in Belgium, although for some of that time she had semi-diplomatic status.
