Valentino Rossi concerned about shoulder recovery

Valentino Rossi’s opening press conference as a factory Ducati rider was dominated by the recovery of his damaged right shoulder and his hopes and aspirations of turning the Bologna factory into MotoGP world champions again. A conspiracy theorists dream

Interesting stuff, a mixture of facts, speculation and conjecture with a whiff of caution, disinformation and total confidence. My subtext over all these articles says " me and this bike are going to kick everyone's arse but don't be surprised if it's not instant (but I always say that) "

Dissimulation indeed Jamie

Rossi's just nursing that line for as long as it takes. The fact is he came back after putting an extra joint in his leg at Mugello 2010 and raced for the remainder of the season - some 11 races - including a win and a fair few podiums. He can't have been in that bad a shape! But to be fair to him the shoulder together with the 'nasty and evil' Ducati does put him on the back foot for the early part of 2011 at least. Will he need to prolong the injury any further than say May?

No such thing as can't

I seem to remember in the 2003 off season when Rossi was moving from Honda to Yamaha, there was a sound byte, not sure if it was with the BBC or some other sports company, but Rossi said - We can't win the title in 2004. He then turned up at the first race and beat Biaggi on the Honda and then beat Gibernau over the course of the season to take the title.

He also said at Laguna Seca 2009, there is no way that we can beat Casey, then he beat

Sometimes Rossi likes to throw his opponents off course or sell them a dummy, I'm not saying that he isn't struggling with his shoulder, but I wouldn't say that he won't be in the mix come the opening race.

Deja Vu

Mind games are  a primary weapon in sport, you can beat your opponent long before you get to the arena if expertly executed. It takes a tough character to repel or ignore words that  make you question yourself and as mindset is critical to belief it only takes a nick to make a crack. Even the strongest willed people have off days so if you time the assault well nobody is impervious.

There are those that consider it unsporting but I think they miss the point. It's just another tool for winning. And EVERYONE does it to some degree but we only really notice when it's as blatant as Valentino has sometimes made it. Obviously.

Rossi v Biaggi was personal even before the Jedi mind tricks started which weren't even the main issue. The on track shenanigans meant Rossi had to go for the brain if he wanted to prevail and it was a changing of the guard of sorts. Biaggi led with his face (specifically his mouth) from the beginning  and couldn't have been any bigger a target :) for Rossi to dance round and jab at. It took some time to actually break him but Max did a lot of the work himself.

Rossi v Gibernau For me this was a bit different because I thought Gibernau a nice enough fella if a bit twee & annoyingly fast, word at the time also was that Sete's missus (Esther Canadas) was enjoying hospitality at the Nou Camp with some right footed dead ball specialist midfielder or other. If so, Gibernau was an instant kipper but still dismantled in an almost dissecting way that at the time I found a little uncomfortable.

Until someone can bat it back at Valentino and it work  it's always going to be his ballpark.

Lost in translation

So to translate... "F**k this Ducati is a bitch to ride, how the hell did Stoner get those wins last year? If Jez doesn't manage to sort the bike out in time and give me M1 handling with RC212V power I'm screwed. I'd better start getting my excuses ready as to why I'm not competitive come March as we'll need the first 5 races as extended testing"

Crying wolf, but..

how do you tame a front end that may not be fully 'talking' to you when you have a leg and shoulder that are not 100%?  - and you have NH rather than Colin Edwards as a team mate!?

it can't come as any suprise to any of us can it ?  I could have predicted this post about the shoulder a month ago to be honest.

if you are the GOAT then show it on the bike and not with mind games!  however it dosen't matter what tatics rossi uses, i don't think for a minute that lorenzo or stoner are rattled by him anyway !!

Do not worry about your shoulder VR worry about the evil nasty Duke at full speed snapping and biting you if you ride it timidly.
