Bikes to get warning systems ‘within two years’

Motorcycles that warn riders when they’re speeding or cornering too fast will be on the road in two years, say researchers.    Warning systems have been fitted to a Yamaha Tenere and Triumph Sprint for tests by the Motor Industry Research Association. Details of the tests were first reported by MCN a year ago, when we revealed a prototype would use GPS...

Stay Calm and Carry on

Before anyone gets to excited, I have test some of these systems out, you can read what I think via this link. www.live-to-ride.co.uk - Blog I have also talk to a number of the people driving and developing these systems; if anyone from MCN would like a balance view on the systems you can contact me.

For the record this is the first time that real world riders have been ask to try any system, MCN itself asked for you guys to volunteer last summer to help MIRA get feedback on the system. To protect rider right FEMA were one of the partners in the project. Is this something we need as rider, well that the debate. One thing to know, at no point does the computer take control, it just gets very upset with you.

Isn't fly by wire on the new BMW.

wont stop bad drivers

We can be dressed like Robocop and be on hoverbikes but it still wont stop bad drivers not looking in mirrors, not indicating before changing lanes, lighting fags, doing makeup in mirror etc.

How on earth can a computer tell you how fast to go round a corner safely? All the electronics/GPS/blah blah wont be able to tell you that there are wet leaves or horse sh*te on the road just round the next bend.

Arent there loads of warnings about passive radiation n things when using mobile phones? I dont fancy spending x amount of time a day with a device like that next to my brain bleeping and buzzing away.

What a joke.

Wouldn't it just be confusing because it says that they tested it by putting vibrating things in your helmet which would take your mind of the road and make you make mistaces which would make the chances of a crash more likely.

"Going around a corner too fast"

This is brilliant - it warns you you're going around a corner too fast.  What are you supposed to do - straighten up and stop cornering?  Hit the brakes?

We know a song about that..

Oh the gps aerial is connected to the satnav
And the saferider is connected to the rider alert system,
And the bluetooth is connected to the cellphone...

And then you have the saferider, the satnav and a cellphone call needing the attention of the rider.
Don't forget your airbag suit, disconnect it when getting off your bike or it will activate.

I think I'll go mountain climbing, it's beginning to look much safer than riding a motorcycle in the future.

So long as it's optional I can see no problem... but the speed I can take a corner now compared to the speed I could take a corner 15yrs ago, when I was less experienced are worlds apart... not to mention the speed I could corner on 1 bike/set of tyres compared to another... will it read the road surface?... how the hell does it know if it's raining or recently been gritted or dry & sunny?... will it know that I'm familiar with the road or am new to it?... these are all factors which effect how I decide to take a corner or approach a hazard (& road signs & my eyes generally warn me of the hazard). A constantly actvated system would be annoying & counter productive.

It may be a useful aid to some & if it saves some lives great, but it's not for me.

Too Fast is Too Late?

OK, a significant number of motorcycle accidents is down to us ending up in the ditch of a bend, but if I remember the numbers it also says that these accidents also happen mostly at night and alcohol is involved. Most corners are not long sweepers, by time you are in there, your ass already twitching then your helmet starts vibrating...once your brain has registered all this won't you have already survived or ditched the bike? Look at the joke of the new test centre's? It is fine giving moto-journalists and test riders. And if people are trained using only this tech could they then safely ride an older bike without? And what is too fast? I know my bike can do lean angle's and speed's I will not reach. I could imagine a LED on the lash that goes from green to red as you lean over, set-up by the manufacturer, motors and vibrating cheek pads? They want 200+ for an inch lower seat, what they going to charge for this thing? And FEMA is backing this!?

The project coordinator is Dr. Evangelos Bekiaris (abek@certh.gr) perhaps Kevin Ash should have a word?

I'm going to apply for euro funding so everyone gets a free track day. I bet that would improve riding and help with safety, but would it get funded?
