Somewhere in the States has a higher than average speed limit but .............

the penalties for breaking the limit are draconian.

The rationale is that you can go faster but heaven help you if you take the piss.

Motorway speed limit.

"The idea behind the change is to reduce journey times, as the Government believes that the economy could be improved if motorists spend less time behind the wheel."

Perhaps they'll prosecute the dawdlers and the lane-hoggers for conduct likely to damage the economy then? Heck, let's just call it treason.

Speed limit

The speed limit for a transit style van is 50mph on single carriageways, 60mph on dual carriageways, and 70mph on motorways. They should never weigh more than 3.5tonne anyway which anyone can drive on a standard car licence. The van rule should be changed to be the same as cars. I bet most 4x4's weigh more than peoples daily loads in their vans!

I notice most van drivers ignore this law, but I have seen on some TV cop program van drivers receiving a penalty for this. I don't have a van, but when I hire one these special speed limits feel ridiculous.

downshift...

i drive a van (2.8 turbo diesel dontcha know, woohoo) which as you say is supposedly restricted to 50mph on A roads, when it is just as capable of car speeds, overtakes and braking!  Most HGV's don't observe the 40mph limit and you don't see them get pulled by the old bill...

vans

It's to do with braking distance that this speed limit is the way it is. But I bet a van is no worse than a 4x4, these new transits I sometimes hire have ABS and ESP!

Speed Limits

If I'm on the bike, I'd much rather be stretching the limit on an A or B road.   Usually I'm only on the motorways if its raining and I want to get home quick.

Autobahns are great but wont work here until the lane discipline gets a lot better. Most Autobahns are only two lanes, but you very seldom see anybody hogging the overtaking lane.
