Bus lane trial ends

A trial of motorcycles in bus lanes is being scrapped over concern for cyclists, even though it hasn’t resulted in a single collision between the two. The London borough of Ealing is pushing ahead with plans to boot motorcyclists out of bus lanes from June 27, first reported by MCN in January. A statement on the council’s website says: ‘The collision...

In a word

BOLLOCKS.

Cyclists in London are the most dangerous things on the road. At least we dont intentionally run pedestrians down and jump red lights. Fact. Case closed.

Oh, I like to ride my pushbike also but whenever im on the road I do actually stop for traffic lights and zebra crossings.

... & when there's a sudden increase in the accidents involving motorcycles after June 27th they'll blame it on lack of motorcycle training or born again bikers... society takes the piss out of us...if the safety of cyclists is such an issue ban buses & taxis from bus lanes & leave them to us 2-wheelers.

bus lanes

in devon it's a case of pick and mix with using bus lanes. some you can some you cant and some last about 100 yards. on the plus side you can always rely on the taxi drivers to ignore that whole boring signalling  palaver.

Quote 'Whilst there were no direct collisions between a motorcycle and a pedal cycle, it is suggested that there must be a causal link given that the only change between the data-sets was the motorcycle experiment.'

Pure drivel.

WTF???

If a cyclist has a collision with anothervehicle, which is NOT a motorbike, how the f### can it be the responsibility of bikers?  If a bus knocks over a pedestrian, is that our fault too???  As usual, bikers are being made a scapegoat for other people's inability to take care on the roads.

This is why cyclists have accidents...

<a href="http://www.gifbin.com/985418"><img src="http://www.gifbin.com/bin/062011/1307451015_bicyclist_gets_squeezed_between_bus_and_truck.gif" alt="funny gifs" /></a>

Nothing to do with motorcycles, only their own stupidity.

I have seen a longer version of this vid and the cyclist weaves through the traffic at speed, chopping across lanes before he meets the bus. Luckily, he was unhurt and carried on his way... But christ, how close was that?

If this was a vid of a biker, everyone on here would rightly be condemning them as an idiot and having a go about their riding being bad for the image we have... So how come cyclist get to use this sort of stuff to say other road users are the problem?

Bus lane trial ends. Motorcycles out.

In fairness MCN should have quoted the following sections from the report:

"The hypothesis is that pedal cycles are reacting to the presence of motorcycles in bus lanes by travelling nearer to the kerb than before, making them less visible to vehicles turning across their path."

"The (separate) TfL trial showed that there was a statistically significant increase in motorcycle collision rates at the test sites and by an amount that was far too large to be explained by increased numbers of motorcycles."

However, I too think this decision is probably scientifically/statistically flawed, but the actual figures are hard to find. It's likely that the accident numbers are quite low and it's too easy to use provocative terms like "a doubling-" or "a 100% rise in accidents" (not used here) when there may be one in Year 1 and two in Year 2, for example. (Speed camera sites are justified in this way too, where they can.) Statistical science struggles under such circumstances so it's not black-and-white and data-interpretation requires an amount of common sense.

Still, even given a bus lane I'd avoid it, preferring to filter to the right of traffic and use my roadcraft. Nipping down the left lane seems more dangerous, falsely-confident that you have right-of-way and no one is going to cut left. And there are great big, slow-moving buses parked up or blocking the view ahead, chucking soot in your face and encouraging you to move out into the traffic. Not to mention the cyclist hazard!

Aside from the pro-cycling, anti-motorcycling connotation this is no great loss, in my mind.

JiggyJ,

I've seen similar vids too, of both cyclists and motorcyclists, to be fair. LCC lobbying bestows a much cosier image of cycling which the politicos love. Just look at Boris' London cycle hire scheme. They're not the mountain bikes which you might expect, the type most people buy, and most other bike hire companies offer. They look more like the old sit-up-and-beg bikes used by flat-capped delivery boys, French-Resistance girls and gowned university professors. Romanticism!

The lobbying works. Foolish cyclists are putting themselves alongside lorries in the blind spot at junctions, and when the lorry inevitably swings left they are squeezed into the railings. The response has been a campaign to make lorry drivers more aware of the danger!

Idiots

In some parts of the country an official drought has been delclared. There are also more bikes on the road at this time of year. I conclude a casual link between motorcyclists and drought conditions.
