Smoke comming from under seat on VTR Firestorm

HI all

I have a 1997 VTR Firestorm.. Full service in Feb 2011

Need some help.. Came home tonight and see smoke comming out from under the seat. Took seat off and it is comming out of a black box (screwed to frame - back brake side) what is it? ok to keep riding?

Any Idea's - ?

If so can I replace it myself?  it is difficult?

thanks

smoke

I don`t believe you want to carry on riding with smoke coming out from under the seat:wacko:.This black box could be the main fuse/relay or the reg/rectifier,either case you should disconnect the battery.Somebody on here may know this black box but can you send a pics?

Honda VTR 1000F Firestorm 1997

Hi dadmacca and welcome to the site

As Jaffa90 says, that is your regulator/rectifier which is burnt out big time:upset:.This is quite a common problem with Honda's across the board. There is only one problem(besides it going wrong)It can break down and just stop charging the battery or it can also break down and over charge the battery with high voltage damaging(Alternating Current) AC current direct from the alternator. The battery is DC (Direct current). So you will need to check your battery hasn't been cooked, when you replace the reg/rec if the battery isn't charging fully the new reg/rec will be working over time and burn out like the old one.If in any doubt replace both at the same time. Good Luck
