Starting problems!!!

Hi all my 1999 cbr900 is a nightmare to start in the mornings/evenings, I have just done a service plugs, filters, and oil) once i get her started she runs fine pulls like a train and ticks over fine. But it is just getting her running that seems to be the problem. Now i have taken the tank of again checked that the spark plug leads/plugs are fitted correctly and made sure that the fuel lines are conected right and all seems ok. Is it a case that the carbs need to be ballanced or is there somthing els that im missing?

cheers all and ride safe:smile

cold start

Is the choke cable pulling all the choke plungers fully out on all the carbs? Is there a smell of petrol when trying to start it? Is there any fluid on the floor where the bike is kept? How do you get it started and do you have to keep the revs up with the throttle?

starting probs

when im trying to start her it turns over at what i would say is a normal speed, it doesn't sound slow like the battery doesn't have enough charge. there is however a faint smell of fuel (no liquid marks under the bike or on the floor) Also i did notice that after putting my first post on today when getting home my fuel tap had been turned of while parked at work yet i did a 14mile trip from work to home which kind of makes me think that if the fuel taps not working whist is sitting overnight it may be flooding the carbs?

cheers for your help guys :ph43r:

fuel tap

Do you know what fuel tap positions you have ? (run, pri, res, off). At this time of the year the petrol in the carbs evaporate a little when the engine is switched off.If you cannot prime the carbs it`s a case of opening the throttle on full choke until the engine fires and then shutting off  for the choke to take over.

Honda Fireblade CBR 900RR 1999 RRX

Hi

Did this problem start before or after you did your plug oil and filter change?.Not that long ago you where posting that you were going to do your own carb balance - well did you?.Also what miles has the bike done?its 12 years old now,so when were the shim's last checked?.Could be worth investigating the fuel tap as it is a vacuum type, check the cylinder were the vacuum pipe goes to see if its running overly rich. Can't remember if that type of vacuum tap can bypass the tap if the diaphragm has gone, and suck neat fuel down the vacuum pipe?Good Luck
