Scotland on the cheap

Good roads- stick to the W. Coast and you cannot go wrong. Usual suspects are A82 through Glencoe, A830 to Mallaig,Whole of Skye, A87 to Kyle of Lochalsh, A86 from Ft William, Cattle Pass to Applecross, Assynt mountains north of Ullapool, coastal road through Kyle of Tongue.

Cheap=camping which is free in Highlands, just use common sense. I would strongly recommend campsite at Applecross as a "must do". Only £7 a night and a great view across to Skye with a great pub in village. Found a beautiful little site at Akmelvich about 5 miles N. of Lochinver which is worth a look as well.Cheap (£6) and you can camp within feet of the sea close to a perfect white beach.

Try looking at Caledonian MacBrayne website for cost of island hopping ticket-would be a great way to plan a holiday and not expensive for a one month ticket.

camping

I can second the awesome campsite at Achmelvich, plus it does good chips too!

If you have any time left after riding the roads posted above I would also advise you to head right to the north. Nice roads up on the north coast, plus there is a nice campsite at Kinlochbervie and Durness. But if you are going to Scotland take advnatage of the "right to roam" and pitch up anywhere (within reason)! lovely spots on the banks of loch lomond, loch tummel and tay! Only thing is you probably won't have time to do it all so prioritise what you want to see/do and save other things for trip number 2 as you will want to come back!

North scotland and down west coast

This is the run we done this year, taking the long way to go to knockhill for the BSB. Awsome roads.

Aberdeen - Buckie - Inverness - Brora - Wick - Thurso - Tongue - Ullapool

Stayed At the Keilidh 20 quid for a night, basic but plenty.

Ullapool - Gairloch - Kyle Lochalsch - Invergarry - Fort William - Killin - Crieff - Knockhill
