No great shock there. It was only the other year they said they couldn't see the point of racing both series.

Could be interesting times for WSB, what with Yamaha now doing one and Ducati inevitably not coming back in when they won't be allowed to race the 1199.

Genuinely bad news for WSBK. I get the feeling that were it not for the Yamahas and Carlos Checa then we'd be looking at a series with the Aprilia being the single competitive machine within it.

But here's hoping that they redirect their efforts into making their road machines more competitive and less expensive - crap sales figures definitely won't help racing efforts in the long term. Their prices have gone way beyond a joke.

Cannabalisation

A few races ago in WSBK there were 7 manufacturers running in the top 7 positions on track.

The number of different manufacturers in WSBK has been its strength, its depth and the reason why its one of the most competitive series. The loss of yamaha is certainly a blow and will make other teams consider which series to put thier bikes into.

BMW and Aprilia (and kwak) are the only remaining full factory teams
Honda, Duke, Suzuki and Yam were the factory supported privateers

For 2012 where would YOU put your bikes and money if you were running a factory squad?
For me, I would choose 2012 for WSBK and last chance at the championship before switching to MotoGP IF the new rules look to have worked out.... but a big if ont he rules

Melandri

I thought Marco Melandri had just signed a new deal last week? Will we see the return of the Hayate in WSB with an old Yamaha hidden underneath?

As has been said earlier it should'nt come as any surprise since the impending rule changes within MotoGp. To run several teams in both series is a huge task so it makes sense to commit to just one, that one being the most prestigious. WSB should be run, and i personally feel should ALWAYS have been run, with more emphasis on the individual road bikes performance. Tweak them to a degree, simple mods etc, but full factory machines aren't what we buy in our local dealership! Superstock and it's 'limits' should be the 'new' WSB.
