Indy MotoGP: Ben Spies sets first practice pace

Ben Spies made good use of a host of upgrades on his factory Yamaha YZR-M1 machine to top the timesheets at the end of a sun-drenched opening MotoGP practice session at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Using a more powerful in-line four-cylinder motor, new fairing and upgraded electronics package, Spies made the perfect start to his home race with a lap of...

I'm sure he'll do well next season bud but i don't think he'll reach 'alien status'. I may be wrong though. Looking forward to Quali tomorrow as i've a feeling Ben will pull something out of the bag. He's a defo for a podium too.

Spies kicked ass on the R1! but I was at Imola a few Years ago, and Supersic was competetive right away on a factory Aprillia, still he cannot beat the alliens at Moto-gp level. That is why its ashame even 125 2 strokes are going away. Ridding a 2-stroke 125 bike with a power band of 2000 revs even on a factory bike, sorts out the real riders. The new 250 4-strokes have an Alarm clock instead of a rev counter.

Alien status.

I thought it would have been this year but not the case but he has beaten them before more then once most notably on the tracks where he got his first podium finishes most notably at Indy where he got the better of his now team-mate and the rider that left Yamaha also stuffing Pedrosa in his final ride for Tech 3.

carcleanerboy u r half right...

..."He goes well on tracks the got better knowledge than the other riders but has not hit the heights you and other got over excited about"...

And which tracks does Ben have better knowledge than the other riders? (think this through my friend)

You are right that he hasn't hit the heights I (and others) thought he would so far this year. But I (we) didn't know that Honda would make the leap in performance they did either.

There are no excuses, but there are reasons Ben isn't doing as well as expected. Just wait until next year when the Yamaha has ample power to allow full sized men like Ben to accelerate like the smaller framed boys.

You got a taste of it at the last 1000cc test. There will be more to come.

Tracks

I think the only track he knows more than the rest is laguna seca as the AMA race there twice in the year. AMA doesn't go to Indianapolis so he's only raced there in MotoGp. The rest of the tracks he's learned since World Superbikes and MotoGp. I also believe there is still more to come from Spies and do believe he will win a championship.

i don't understand how a 1000cc M1 mimics a WSBK R1 .... i've not ridden either of them so i can't make an informed comparison.  there are still riders on the grid from the 990 days so why have a chance of doing well in 2012?  as for this season, unless i'm very much mistaken, Dovi has had five podiums and is on 163 points, while Spies has had two and is on 109 - so who's having the better season so far?

and why is it that the americans are seemingly useless at laying tarmac and preparing a decent race surface?  the one chance that indy had to finally prepare a uniform track and riders are commenting on it being not fit for a world chamionship.  and indy still wants to be on the calendar next year?  don't make me laugh.
