Staff bikes: Ducati Diavel - Well worth the money

The Diavel is a strange machine to say the least. It goes very fast, stops just as quickly and is already pumping out huge figures (162bhp). This all left me wondering how to improve upon its already epic performance. I’ll be honest with you – I’ve little technical knowledge of what suspension really does in practice, how it does it and...

Hmmm. Sticking a £900 shock on a bike that is £15K new isn't going to be the first thing everyone does, surely?

Cost of Bike

If I was to go out and spend £15k on a bike, I would then want to spend another £1200 upgrading the suspension. just seems like Ducati could have done more to develop the bike first.

The bike needs this upgrade but £1200 for something that should be sorted does annoy me (will start saving the pennies)

Yep, get this before the exhaust.

I do wonder why none of the reviews highlighted the suspension issue before this upgrade hmmm

Everyone needs to stop thinking of it as a £15k bike and go in to ownership knowing that they need to get £1200's worth Ohlins fitted staight out the crate.

Well, don't know what to think about a 13k£ bike that can get 50% better by upgrading it with a 1.2k£ accessory... Oh yes, that is not a good stock bike.

Ohlins

Whack a top end Ohlins shock into any standard bike is going to improve the suspension, you don't NEED this upgrade imo, just like you don't in many top end bikes.

Italian design

Rather than take issue at the cost of the hardware, I'd have a far bigger problem with owning a bike that is such a dog to work on that it would take 4 hours to drop out the original shock and swap it over. What is all that about? Ducati always make great rider's machines but the designers are obviously idiot-savants.

Reminds me of the one I had that was so poorly laid out that to get a c-spanner to the shock's preload adjuster I'd have needed to remove the exhausts. You almost couldn't credit it.

@JamesQGM the thing is this bike does need the upgrade, have you ridden one?

Thing is as an onwer, I read all the reviews that said the bike was excellent, I took it out for an hour test ride but was so excited that you don't really analys all the bad bits, your just having fun and anything that is a little suspect you think you can rectify with setting it up with your prefrence.

So you shell out £15.5k for the bike and you start to run it in, you fiddle with the body position and the suspension thinking that it just needs to settle down but it isn't right.  You go to the owners forums and see that everyone else is having the same issues (no feel in the corners and bounces over bumps).

So you either pay to sort the suspension out or your leave the dog in the garage and ride somthing else.......... so £1200 to sort it is a bargin over the £3k you will most probably loose to trade it in...... and then what do you trade it in for?  a monster *yuk*

I agree with a couple of comments here, why is it that after spending a huge amount of money buying the bike, by sticking a new shock on it, to quote Neevsey " makes it more stable". Sorry but it's another example of the p**s being taken out of us. For 15.5K it should have Ohlins as standard.
