80mph motorway speed limit by 2013

Motorway speed limits could increase to 80mph by 2013. Transport Secretary Philip Hammond said there had been "huge advances in safety and motoring technology" since the current 70mph limit was introduced in 1964 and raising it "would generate economic benefits of hundreds of millions of pounds through shorter journey times". A consultation will be launched this year. The Department for Transport says the...

I think the speed limit increase will make no difference to the traffic flow at the times of the day that would make a difference to the commuter. Until the lane discipline in this country improves the traffic can only go as fast as that person sitting out there at 60mph. If everyone could pull back in when they are done and yes that includes when you can see something in the distance doing 59mph that you will eventually overtake, then the road would be allot safer and the speed limit could even head for the 90mph mark.

85Mph Zero tolerance!!

Why not set it at 85? Allows for drifting a bit over 80. But have zero tolerance at  that. But heres the rub, Proper police (or another new agency)!!!  management of bad driving, it could pay for itself. Why do we have to wait until 2013?  They could treat it like a tax and put it up tommorrow!!!

What I cannot understand is , why are all these new laws envisaged by the E.U. in the near future ,mainly aimed at bikes  & safety  coming soon ,and yet  a 80 m.p.h. limit  is on the cards ? . And  Ireland are bringing in a stiffer drink driving law , which we will probably inherit  . So on one hand safety first  and the other is probably a ploy to flog more fuel to speeding motorists ,because of the ruduction in vehicle use due to the price of  petrol & diesel  ! .

Why bother...

So they'll spend more millions in consultation, then to change laws, update books like highway code etc and for what? Maybe the EU has clearer better roads than us. Most of the time the M25 is flashing 40 or 50. So you won't do 80 there. Most motorways have two lanes of lorrys side by side  and a fully loaded van in the outside lane trying to get passed them. Not 80 there either. So they say do 80 as most people do 80 anyway. Who can afford to do 80? Company car drivers with fuel cards and that's about it. It is true, vehicles have better brakes etc etc, but there now isn't the space to do 80! Save the money and leave it as it is. If the cops won't bother with people doing 80, fine leave them carry on if they can. But no more wasting money.

They will not go ahead with this. Its just more smoke and mirrors to distract people from all the other crap they are doing. A huge waste of even more money paid to all those consultants, and quango's and other government friends.

If the speed limit goes up to 80 people will drive at 90 or more. DURRR....

If they want to do something usefull for a change instead of shining their trouser arses on commons seats all week doing eff all. They could remove the 50mph speed limits on some UK Counties roads because they screw up everyones fuel consumption especially HGVs. Vehicles are designed to give optimum fuel consumption at 56 mph. Some vehciles will not run in top gear below 50mph. More fuel used = more tax paid in fuel duty.

So how about those shiney arsed blighters in the Commons do something useful for a change ?

this is just a diversion that will never happen. anyone who believes what a politician says must be insane anyway. we are such wimps in the UK. if the government announced that we all had to have our balls chopped off 99% would line up for the operation without a fuss. if you haven't got the guts to vote BNP at least give UKIP a try.

top speed limit

Let's hope they raise it to 80mph on DUAL CARRIAGEWAYS too.

Proper police to stop BAD driving, not SPEEDING drivers.
