Portimao test times: Laverty stuns in first Aprilia outing

Eugene Laverty fired a warning shot to his 2012 WSB rivals in Portugal today by setting the fastest lap time first time out onboard his factory PATA Aprilia. The 25 year old Irishman set an impressive 1.42.8s best at the end of the test to top the time sheets and show beyond doubt that he will be a serious title contender...

Fab on a Beemer

So that's the end of Suzuki then. Might as well shut the gates at Hamamatsu now.

Interesting to see.

No Suzuki in the standings hopefully they aren't following Yamaha out of WSB.

stop sensationalism

What a load of tosh. Did Laverty not run at the sharp end at races? Is the Aprilia not a good bike? So how can ths be surprising?? If this is stunning, then Berger should be crowned champion.

I think its naieve to say that Checa's bike wasn't a factory effort.  All the commentators more or less said that, with the Duke Italian guru hanging round the pits during the season, and only at the last round had his clip board out.

Makes perfect sense.  How else was the bike so strong,  when in theory it hadn't "been developed"!   Load of bollocks.   That is their only way to showcase the bike,  and increase/maintain it's appeal.    If it hadn't factory support,  an old bike with no factory input wouldn't have, imo, been able to be anywhere near it's performance.  And to be faster down the straights at some rounds?!!!!     If it looks like a duck etc.....

New model out next year,  so I think there will be a good bit of factory input to the race team.   They have, imo, chosen to obsfucate because if the bike didn't do well,   they would have, to use an Americanism,  plsusible deniability  lol !!

ps -  I'd like to see Laverty on a full Aprilia factory bike.  The PATA is a satellite no?     Does Camier deserve to keep his ride after two pretty naff seasons on a full monty RSV4?  Stick Lav on that,  and let's see what he can do.   At least, imo,  he would give Biaggi an uncomfortable time.

SUZUKI

Jack Valentine runs a great team. With the Hopper on board they could be real title contenders. Not sure about Shakey on the World Stage. Apart form his 2003 WSB wins at Brands, he did little else.

No it is a full factory bike the same as Biaggi's apparently (but we'll see).

The idea of putting Laverty in a a one rider factory team separate from Biaggi has something to do with Biaggi having a veto over his teammate selection and guaranteed number one staus in the team.  This hampered camier and he never got equal treatment in his two years at Aprilia.

Running them in two separate teams gets around this clause and gives Laverty equal equipment and treatment from the factory, which will no doubt upset the Roman emporer :)
