Euro Tour 2012

Each year I organise a European bike tour for a small number of like minded people and at this moment I have a couple of spaces not yet taken by the usual crew.

This is not a money making venture, I do this for fun and to put a bit back in to biking, so its all at cost.

The 2012 tour is to Italy, taking in the Dolomites, routes through the Umbrian and Tuscany countryside with visits to Rome, Venice and Pisa plus of course Europe's second highest pass, the Mighty Stelvio and finishing with a run through the black forest.

We head out on Sunday 17 June and return Saturday 30 June.  This is all hotel based (2&3 star), so not for the camping enthusiasts.  I will do all the leg work for you; hotel and ferry bookings, route sheets and euro touring notes.  The budget for these items is £850 per person sharing a room.

You don't have to be an experienced euro tourer to join us, there is plenty of experience to call on if you are thinking of your first trip, but you should be an experienced rider .

If you want more details let me know and I can let you have the tour outline.

Euro 2012

Thanks for the offer but I'm familiar with the road and the area.  Much underrated the south of Italy; if you have the time to get South of Rome there are some really nice biking roads,  Sadly, not able to get that far on this trip, but it will still be very nice

Seeking advice from experienced...

I live in San Francisco.  My wife and I want to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary by taking a two week motorcycle tour of Italy.  We would love to join an experienced crew.  I have a BMW 1200LT which I want to bring from California instead of renting.  Any suggestions???

A few initial thoughts.

Its certainly do-able and I appreciate why you might want to bring your own bike as we do the same in reverse.

To state the obvious you'll need bike Insurance, bike recovery insurance and health/travel insurance.  There are a number of shiping companies which have their own rules as to how the bike has to be shipped etc, so you'll need to look into that.

I have heard some people suggest it is cheaper to rent a bike in Europe and join a tour organised by one of the rental companies which is also an option.

I have not researched this but I would expect you could fly into Italy and start your trip there, which saves about 5 days compared to starting from the UK as it takes us a couple of days to get there and a couple to get back.  The only potential issue is language - not sure how your italian is? To join a UK based tour you are at least certain that we all speak broadly the same language.

If you would like to go into more details, then drop me a personal message and we can get into more detail.

Greeting from San Francisco

Thank you for your kind reply.  I'm leaning towards bringing my own bike because #1 it's cheaper, and #2 no rental company lets a tour style bike with a comfortable passenger seat such as BMW K1200LT.  I wouldn't mind starting the tour from UK since it will allow us to enjoy other parts of Europe beside Italy.  I don't mind spending few extra days.  I'm even thinking of selling my bike in UK after the trip to take advantage of favorable exchange rate.  I will do more research on insurance, shipping, selling, etc.  I hope all things work out and I can join you in June...

Thank you,

Gibs

USA bike export

Hi,

Sorry to put a dampner on your idea of importing your bike from the USA but it will not work, main reason is that your bike will need homologation if you intend to sell it in the UK plus it will need to be fully imported which means paying import duties. You will have to de-register your bike in the USA then export it to the UK get it homogated, registered, MOT and insured which you cannot do as you are not a resident of the UK.
You should check out freight costs as well, I am sure that you can hire a BMW from several Europen bike tour or dealer companies a lot cheaper than freighting your bike plus it will be fully insured for Europe.
Don't forget that in the UK they drive on the other side of the road so you will have to modify your headlamp to change the beam pattern.

Good luck
