Spec ECUs? Forget it. That's not going to cut costs in MotoGP. Ezpeleta needs to visit a showroom or 3. For $15k-20k USD, I can get a bike right off the showrrom floor with the brilliant Bosch ABS 9 Enhanced and multi mode traction control. Removing the tech would make MotoGP a dinosaur. Club level racing would surpass MotoGP as the pinnacle of racing except for the talent level. I could buy a better bike off the showroom floor and spend 15k extra to get up to 250 RWHP, add 16.5" wheels and tires. Only carbon-carbon brake discs and pads would be the wallet buster because those need replacing twice every race weekend.
The electronics are not the issue with the price. The problem is paying dozens of dedicated software engineers per team to program them for every race. But there's the addition of this GPS crap, that I do believe needs to go away. Programming variable settings based on GPS coordinates does not belong in racing. I still believe the rider needs to make his own decisions with regards to how he rides and handles track sections. The electronics are cheap. Make a spec ECU and you will still be spending shitload of money on the programmers. The difference would be that the manufacturers would no longer be able use their own tech to filter down to production models and thatdoes not benefit them to be there anymore.
If you really want to cut racing costs, you need to look elsewhere:
1. MotoGP contract fees. Those need to come down dramatically. Paying for the privilege to be part of motoGP is overpriced. These are not even race entry fees.
2. Instead of the teams footing the bill to run MotoGP, Dorna needs to shell out the money. It's their business venture and only they stand to profit from it. They need to make their money off of ticket sales, not the teams.
3. Dorna salaries. How much does Carmelo earn? Enough to where his daughter can buy the Spelling mansion as a second home. The fat bastard isn't worth that much.
4. Travel. While it's cool to see Brazil added to the schedule, it is the most expensive place to travel to because nothing else is close to it. It is so out of the way.
