Redesigning the Trumph Tiger 1200 Explorer

The all-new Triumph Tiger 1200 Explorer - directly targeted at the BMW R1200GS - went through a major, late transformation to end up as we see it now. MCN was given exclusive access to Triumph's designers and management at its Hickley HQ in Leicestershire to get the full story of the 1200cc adventure bike's development. And we were stunned not just by...

Thumbs up from me

I think if you are going to compete with the likes of bmw, or any manufacturer then you must take their product and make it better, the way bmw itself did with their superbike, they openly admit that they bought a fireblade and a K5 Gixxer thou, so its no bad thing that the new Tiger is similar to the GS, I'm a fan of the GS having been able to spend a bit of time on a friends bike while away in Germany, only thing where it sometimes falls short is perhaps the performance......As a Tiger 1050 rider myself i love the Triple, its such a flexible torquey motor, so the thought of a 1200 Triple is attractive.

As much as I like the Explorer design, the 20 liter fuel tank makes it an absolut NO GO.

warranty limitations?

@gravelrash

Just read the triumph warranty on their website, seems no worse than many others out there. It makes no mention of having to wash the bike after every ride and in anycase how the hell would they know?

This sounds like another apocryphal story from the BMW owners fan club.

Holey Radiator batman

Nice try Triumph. My two cents worth...

20Litre tank

But a 20 litre tank will... sorry has everyone saying its not enough. So let me guess there will be an explorer Dakar version coming out with a 28 litre tank? Or you can buy an factory accossory tank for it? I wait with baited breath. Having said that 20 litres should give about 400km (250m) range. The number of riders needed to go further is bugger all between gas stations is bugger.

Radiator

The position of the radiator looks to make it extremely vulnerable to get smashed as the bike falls on its side. Strangely enough giant oversize tanks are useful here, they shroud the radiator and prevent damage.

Also I see no mention of wieght? All of these maxi dirtesq bikes are just to bloody heavy to have real fun in the dirt. I assume this is no exception.

Good luck with it Triumph.

Adventurer

It is a good looking bike and it should do well for them, i'm on my 6th Hinckley Triumph, all triples and love them but i have noticed a downturn in machine finish quality since they moved production of some models to Thailand, especially the classic range.

Would be interested to know what percentage of them are manufactured in the UK.

Kingsil - You don't have to take my word for it as there are plenty of documented cases of Triumph refusing warranty claims for deteriorating finish by invoking the "wash every day" clause.

I also personally know people who have been on the receiving end of this pernicious policy.

So, get on t'internet and take a look for youself buddy - Google is your friend

gravelrash....

are you actually saying that triumph's have to be washed 365 days a year to validate the warranty ? I think that would be a huge story for MCN.....

Lets get real!

How many people buying this bike or any big trailie for that matter ever take them off road? I've had a few mates who buy this style of bike purely for the comfy riding position and I honestly don't know anyone who has taken it off road. And if you are going off road, I would have thought the 800XC would be a better, more manageable bet.

The instruction that the bike should be thoroughly cleaned after every ride is hidden away in the Owners Manual and has been invoked by Triumph Warranty Claims to refuse claims when owners have not been able to offer demonstrable proof that the instruction has been followed to the letter.

I don't think MCN would pursue this story as it would not be in their interest as they have long since lost their impartiality with regard to Triumph and they would stand to lose too much in advertising revenues.

Triumph Explorer

I have recently moved to UK after 50 odd years in SA. I have spent the last 10 years doing "extreme" adventure rides (rocks, rivers, gravel, mountain passes etc etc) with my trusty BMW 1200 GS Adventure and there is one advantage that this bike has over all the other so called wannabe Advenure bikes....... thats spokes and tubeless tyres!!!!! Anyone who has ever done "proper" off road riding will confirm that this is the greatest advantage. Where in the middle of nowhere does one get tyre levers etc to replace tubes????? besides the space needed to carry the parts, tools etc. Ever seen abuckled mag rim still riding? Triumph and Ducati are obviously designed for "mickey mouse" adventure riding!!
